Gen 5 CX/VX into Gen 6 car?

Will be shopping for a Civic, likely a Gen 6.
Definitely a 5-speed standard.
I want to swap in taller gearing.
Will a CX/VX tranny from '92-'95 be OK in a Gen 6 car?
Will it be OK in an EX if I get one, with its 127 hp?
I mean, that won't be too much hp for the little old tranny, will it?
(Dunno yet which version of Civic I'll be getting.)

This is mainly a fuel economy thing.
I drive 52 mi each way to work.
The plan is to get a CX/VX tranny and swap it into whatever Gen 6 car I end up with.
The gearing will be taller than the Gen 6 for an mpg improvement.
I don't need blazing performance, just blazing mpg.
My current ride is 3050 lb. and 115 hp, auto trans.
So any stick Civic will outperform my Volvo "brick" even with a taller gear tranny swapped in.

Yes VX car has a smaller diam wheel but the VX tranny has taller gearing than what's in the Gen 6 cars. So the net result if I put one in a Gen 6 car is approx 20% taller gearing than I would have had with a stock Gen 6. Just about right for a nice mpg gain without killing off the engine's ability to move the car.
HX is pretty tough to find. It's way easier to find an EX or even DX. And plenty of HX's have been tuned/hacked into 'performance' cars instead of the mpg champs they were designed to be. So, if a nice and reasonably priced HX doesn't appear when I'm shopping I might very well be able to get some other couple Civic + tranny swap for my money.

don't fall into the misconception that no matter what lower rpm = more mpgs.
the vx trans is garbage, not only is the final drive tall, but the gears are just too far apart. It would be much better if you used the dx 1-5 gearing with the vx 3.25 final drive (that is if you're hellbent on that low of cruising rpm)
all 96-00 5th gears are 0.702, which is the same as the 92-95 dx/vx/cx/lx.
96-00 hx trans is a dx trans with a 3.722 final drive instead of a 4.058

the largest issue I see with this will be the ECU, the trans gearing is programmed into the ECU. When the trans is changed it can seriously change the way the car runs. You may end up with less mpg than with the stock trans.
The best part about the HX... it will give you everything you want in one package, no work required.
For that Honda quality I'd search high and low for a HX and be patient.
For what it's worth, I know exactly how you feel, I've been searching for a VX in good shape for a while also.

Sorry to learn the bad news - tranny swap isn't a good way to get better mpg due to the change snarfing up the ECU. Don't wanna do that!
Yeah, maybe I'll just be real patient and watch for an HX.
Or maybe I'll buy the first nice condition Gen 6 couple that I can find.
We'll see how it goes.

there are other ways to achieve your goal.
Converting the car to OBD1, tuning the ECU with a wideband and setting the right trans settings is always an option. Most of the leading tuning programs out there allow for a wideband input during closed loop operation.
You'd end up with a sort of psudo lean-burn like the VX/HX has, but the power that the stronger engine can deliver.
All though this setup is not for a beginner.
