Default AMSOIL vs. ROYAL PURPLE vs. REDLINE Did I make the right choice??

So I went onto AMSOIL's website to order some 5W-30 to put into my car. And basically what I'm trying to figure out if it was a wise decision or not. I tried to look up various comparison tests between AMSOIL and other brands such as the Royal Purple, Mobil 1, Redline, etc......but everything I found was from 3-5 years old....some older. Couldn't find any recent comparison tests. And I couldn't find any real solid info on Redline oil vs. the other two.

So how bout it.....was this a good choice in oil or should I go with Royal Purple or Redline?? Yes I placed the order already....but it was just recent and hasn't been processed or shipped yet so I can cancel it if necessary. And I understand Redline is a Group V oil but I was also read that it's a better oil for racing applications and not a logical choice for street cars. But again....all the info I could find was a bit sketchy.

ALL brands come recommended to me....and I seem to find people swearing by ALL of these brands....so I'm a little tied up.

And don't F*CK with me either people.....I need some serious and honest answers please!

You made the right call. What variety of oil did you get?

What do you mean by "variety"?? The grade?

** EDIT ** Nevermind. I just remembered there's two different types of 5W-30 they make. I got this one.

Okay I count 4 people that have voted....but only two actually wrote a response.

This is a discussion thread....if you cast a vote please write a response as to WHY you voted for that particular brand or discounted the other brands. kthx!

out of those, id say you made the right choice. i'v heard so-so things about royal purple and i wouldnt use redline oil. the only redline product i've used is "water-wetter" which worked fantastic in my last car.

how come you decided to spend the extra money vs. using something lik mobil1?

Well I've been hearing some things about Mobil1 not being as good as they used to be. I know people still stand by it and it's a good oil....but if there's something better out there....then that's what I want.

To be completely honest with you, I think people bag on M1 because it is so much more affordable than Redline, Torco, Amsoil, etc. Those oils may or may not provide a little better performance. But people that spend the money for the "performance lubricants" wanna feel special that they spent so much more money than the average guy so they bag on M1. That's my theory!

I think it goes a little deeper than that. Mobil1 I believe actually uses Group 3 basestocks....they used to use Group 4. That doesn't give off a very good vibe to alot of people.

I'm not saying that the more expensive oils aren't going to provide better performance. I'm also not saying they are either. I don't have personal experience with anything above M1. I just think some people are a little bone-headed about the whole topic, and have to justify spending the money they did by downplaying how much of a bargain M1 really is.

I know that when my brother and I tore down the f22 in my '91 Accord (with 158k on it), it looked brand new on the inside. It never leaked a drop in it's 17 years of life. I bought it with 71k on the clock from a family friend who said he used nothing but M1 from his first oil change. I never really used synthetic or M1 for the extended oil change interval purpose, but I can say the oil stays cleaner (or transparent) for much longer than any oil I have ever used.

Amsoil might work great (I don't know and i don't want to find out) but don't expect any dealership or warranty help when you have any problems with the engine or transmission. It's not API certified and therefore is not acceptable to be used in any component under warranty.
ANY oil you buy needs to have this seal on it.

Why is it NOT API certified? Does this have anything to do with their claimed "extended drain interval"?? I don't see how it wouldn't pass their test if it's supposed to provide better protection than the other leading oils in their comparison testing.

API certification is voluntary for engine oil marketers. I don't see how the warranty is void if there's a problem with the engine not directly attributed to the oil. And if it IS because of the oil then AMSOIL would now be held liable for the damages.

Because the formula doesn't meet their criteria. API certified oils only are recognized by both Factory and Aftermarket warranty companies.

If the oil is so great why is it not the factory fill on ANY new vehicle?

Probably not cost effective to market to the majority of automakers. I'm guessing maybe it's too expensive to attract auto dealers....that and the whole deal with API certification (which seems to me more like an endorsement).

i have used amsoil and royal purple.
i felt that the royal purple made my car run smoother and better. not to mention the slight increase in gas mileage.
i actually got worse mileage with the amsoil.
driving both in the same condition.
to work and back home shifting at 3500
never hit WOT

LOL. Yeah..I've changed mine 5 times already in 2008, but I drive my car hard. It doesn't leak or burn a drop, but better safe than sorry. I go to the drag strip at least twice every interval too (with like 15-20 runs each time) so that's hard on my car.
