Default won't start...suggestions?

so i'm drivin to advance auto (ironic to this story, i know) one day and i let off the gas in 5th to slow down a little, got down to 45, hit the gas again, and nothing. it was floored and the rpms/speed kept dropping like i wasn't touching the gas at all. i'd hit the gas and a little bit of sound came out of the motor but couldn't tell you what it sounded like, it was pretty feint. downshifted through the gears and same thing throughout all, til i shifted into first, as the motor itself completely died. then it wouldn't start back up and now it sounds like this when i try to start it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVHV0OldyZU

any comments/suggestions? all the pulleys are turning, i've reset the ecu to clear out an old CEL and hope a new one would arise, but just cleared out and no new codes are being thrown. pulled the VC and timing belt is still in tact and taut. thought it was the dizzy but tried replacing that with a known good one and same problem.

two questions one can you see the top of your cam gears with the valve cover on and question two is are they stock cam gears
also check your distributor rotor see if the screw that holds it in place is there if not pull the rotor off and make sure that flat spot is not rounded

ok well check your dizzy in particular that rotor if that is fine then you will have to remove the plastic timing cover just under the valve cover then set your #1 cylinder to tdc then look at the cam gears and you should have one of the four arms pointing almost straight down it will have a stamp on it something like pr4 or something but if you see a stamp that says up or no stamp at all then that means your timing has jumped

well i took the vc back off today and pulled a little on the timing belt, it's loose as all hell, then we found a few teeth laying on the motor mount or the roundabout, my dad actually saw them, but we found two and there were probably more but we didn't see any.. i found a new timing belt is 45 bucks.. we're gonna replace it tomorrow probably. anyone know of any good DIY timing belt replacement guides?

oh and thanks a million steve for your help

it is easy as hell but if you do not have a crankshaft pully tool then you will need an air gun to get that pully bolt off it is a 19mm then you will have to remove the one mount there at the side then you will have to pull all the ten mm bolts out that hold the plastic cover on out but then you will see a 14mm bolt for the tensioner go ahead and loosen that now remove the old belt once old belt is off go ahead and take a 12mm wrench or socket and rotate the cam's counter clockwise until the word up is pointing up. now you are going to want to install the belt weave it back in there just do not put it up and over the cam gears. then put the plastic covers back on then reinstall the motor mount and then the crank pulley once you have reinstalled the crank pulley turn it counter clockwise until the white mark is allinged with the tdc mark on the plastic cover if you do not see the white mark you will notice that the crank pulley has 4 notches in it the one that you want is the lone notch that will be tdc for cylinder 1 now once you have that in place go ahead and put the timing belt up and over the cam gears once this has been done go ahead and take a 14mm socket and retighten the tensioner bolt then reinstall the vc

this is a good time to replace water pump that is held on by 10mm bolts

I hope that timing belt is an OEM one. Don't cheap out on that kind of stuff. The OEM one is good for 90K miles if you don't get any oil or junk on it. I've heard of cheaper belts breaking for the regular 90K interval.

<-- just installed my car's 4th timing belt as it nears the 270K mile interval.

was a success

i think my timing belt before was 1 tooth off but i just turned the dizzy to make up for it...now that it's back to 0 teeth off, the timing is way off again. just gotta turn the dizzy back and i'll be set, i'm pretty sure. the wire going into #1 cylinder ripped outta the boot when i pulled it out to get the vc off, so i'm guessing that's another reason why it's idling weird and getting horrendous gas mileage. otherwise, great success

thanks again, all

oh and the new belt should have been oem, i paid 45 bucks for it from advance for the new one. lol
