Default 88 crx si cam in a dx?

does this mod really work? is it worth doing it? i just want to do something for the mean time and i heard of this little modification. i ran a 16.2 in my dx hatch and i would like to get into the 15's until i get my swap early next year, will putting
the stock crx si cam in my dx hatch help out? if you have one for sale, let me know also.

thanks

I got one in my dx, Yep it is a good mod, I think that the 88si cam will bolt up perfectly, but if you get the 89-91 si cam you will need to get an adjustable cam gear because the cam timing will be off a 1/2 tooth. I paid 50 bucks for a brand new 91 si cam from a guy selling a whole head off ebay. Its an easy swap and it does make a pretty healthy difference, Oh yeah I still get super gas milage with the bigger cam. 40 mph on highway, 35 mpg in town.

who will sell it to me cheaper. thanks for the info.

i guess thats what i meant, the valve clearance. we didn't really know where to set the gap at. we set it
at one gap, and you could hear the valves tapping kinda loud. then we set it to another gap, and the valves don't tap loud
anymore. the valve clearance is the same from the dx specs or the crx si specs? which one do i set it
at?

i put an 88 crx si cam in my 93 dx hatchback. i don't really know what the cam timing is set at? how do
you set the cam timing?
do i need an adjustable cam gear, would that help? a friend of mine will sell me his aem one for like
$80. should i get it?

what do you suggest i do next? adjust the cam timing, if so, explain how the best way to do it is. i may
feel a little difference, maybe i just expected to feel a little more. the only thing is, i think my car still
feels the same, although i can chirp it in third now. let me know any suggestions that may help me out.

thanks,
93hb

what about the cam gear, should i get it? he'll sell it for $80 and its an aem cam
gear?

also, what do i set the valve gap at? the si gap or the dx gap? oh yeah, i did notice
that my rpms rise a little faster. i find myself having to shift faster than i did before
the cam change.

thanks for all the info.

since the valve lash is the same between both motors, use either.

What year is the cam? Always get the cam gear if you have the money. It allows one very important thing.........

Ability to TUNE.

the cam is from an 88 crx si.

i think i will get the cam gear in the next day or two. the guy forgot to bring it to work today so i'll have to wait. when i get, how much do i advance it, or is just
a thing where i have to keep adjusting it until i feel the difference. i heard you
should only adjust one to tow degrees with a stock cam. so how much do i adjust
it with a crx si cam in my dx?

mistabone, what should i do next for a cheap mod? i only want to do one more thing and then i'm going to work on the motor unitl i get the rest of the money for my swap. i just want to be a little faster for the mean time. i got the cam for free
anyway. i'll see what other parts i can get free.

thanks,
93hb

well, Im not mista bone but i think that an si or ex tranny would be a good thing, I got an si tranny in my dx and it has much shorter gear ratios than the dx tranny. You will feel a big difference in acceleration in each gear. also you could get an si or ex intake manifold, or advance your ignition timing. BTW you dont need an adjustable cam gear for the 88 si cam. It works perfectly.

You could also put a d16y8 head gasket in the motor, Thinner gasket mean more compression,

lots of things you can do with stock honda parts for your motor. You can build a complete frankenstien out of the b7. and it will out perform a stock 00 Si without much effort, I do it on a daily basis with one of my friends, he cant believe that I have a 1.5l sohc in my car!

Ok, I'm thinking about doing the same thing in my DX. Let me recap and see if I have all the information correct. If I get a 88 CRX Si cam it can go right in with no cam gear. If I get one from a 91 I should get an adjustable cam gear. Now my question is this... Is the 91 cam a lot better then the 88 cam? Also, are there any other modifications I need to do when installing the cam, or does it just drop right in? You'll have to understand that I've never messed with engine internals before, so I have no idea about installing cams or cam gears.

hondafrk, I'd be very insterested in discussing some of the mods you did to your 1.5 engine. I'm a poor college student so can't afford a swap, but I really am wanting some more power in my 92 DX hatch.

It's a good mod, but why not just change the whole head since you're going through the trouble? Besides, the head will be easier to find than just the cam. Add vtec while you're at it.

what head will fit on my car, and how big of a mod would it be? Could I do it myself if I had some help and a manual?

I recommend you get the 92-95 Si/EX head and tranny. Both will cost you under $400 and you'll pretty much have the equalent power as the Si. If you're asking these questions, I don't think you should install it yourself lol.

I'm not totally ignorant to engines, I've just never tried anything like this. If there's a site out there with instructions and as long as it doesn't involve custom fabrication I think I could probably pull it off. Also, where would be a good place to pick up these parts?

i think i did feel a difference when i put the 88 crx si cam in my dx. i can chirp the
tires in third, in which i never did before, and i feel that i have to shift faster than
i did before. so i think the rpms are rising much faster.

i got my crx si cam for free, so i can't complain. changing out the cam wasn't that
hard. i did have a little help from a guy who works at the honda dealership as a
mechanic. the only i need to do next is adjust the valve gap thing. i think they are
a little to tight so i'm going to loosen them a little.

i can set my ignition timing all the way advanced, by turning the distributor, but my
car will still idle at 900 rpms. it idles at 900 even if i leave the distributor at normal
settings. is this because of the cam i just put in or is it because the valve gap may
be a little off?

If I decide to put a D16Z6 head on my car, would this cam swap still make any sense or would I be better off getting an aftermarket cam for a D16Z6 or what?
