The VW GTI 337 is meant to harken back to the olden days of VW's GTI, first introduced in 1977, althought it didn't make it to our shores until 1983. The first version (called the A1 because of its chassis) was a flyweight sporty hatchback with a 90 horsepower four-cylinder engine and a 5-speed manual. The cars featured black-out trim and red-trimmed interiors. Although it didn't have a really powerful engine, the 90 horsepower it had only had to push around about 1800 pounds, which translates to 20 pounds per horsepower. This is about the same power to weight ratio found in the 150 horsepower version of the A4 GTI (99-01) and is better than the power to weight ratio in the Beetle Turbo (which has the same 150 HP engine previously mentioned.) So Volkswagen saw fit to release a 25th anniversary edition in Europe to celebrate. With a 180 HP turbocharged engine, a six-speed manual transmission, some serious handling hardware, and a sportier interior, the North Americans were getting jealous. So VW released th 25th anniversary edition as the 337 edition over here, because the US has only had the GTI for 19 years and, therefore, should not have a GTI named "25th anniversary edition". 337, by the way, was the original development code for the GTI.

Drivetrain
Sporting the same 1.8 liter turbo engine that runs rampant in the rest of the VW/Audi line, this particular engine is the 180 horsepower version from the Audi TT that also replaces the version found in the Jetta, the GTI, and the Beetle Turbo S. The VW Passat and the Audi A4 with this engine get a boost from 150 to 170 horsepower for 2002. The only car that gets the 150 HP version is the Beetle Turbo (non-S). But what happens in the GTI 337 edition that is such a big deal is that this 180 horsepower is connected to a six-speed manual transmission. People in the know may say, "Yeah? So what? The Beetle Turbo S has the identical setup." The significance of this is that this power is wrapped up in a lighter, more aerodynamic shell for more performance. Although, in truth, the beauty of the 337 lies in the details.

Suspension/Braking
The GTI 337 edition is the first of the A-chassis cars from VW/Audi that has 18 inch wheels from the factory. The A-series cars include the Audi TT, the VW Golf, GTI, Jetta, and New Beetle. The VW Cabrio also rides on the A-series chassis, but is uses the previous generation. Obviously, that includes quite a few cars. The GTI's 18 inch alloy wheels, sourced from BBS and not readily available in the aftermarket, are wrapped in excellent Z-rated Michelin Pilot Sport tires, sized 225/40ZR18. This is also significant because these are the first tires from the factory that are actually worth a damn for a long time. The standard vented front/solid rear disc brakes, which are competent, get replaced by larger discs from the 225 HP Audi TT that are vented at all four corners and include bigger pad area for truly great braking performance. The GTI 337 edition is lowered by about one inch front and rear, with stiffer springs, larger anti-roll bars, and custom-valved shocks. This new setup has been hailed as the "greatest sport suspension from VW ever".

Exterior
The GTI 337 is markedly different from its normal GTI brethren. With a Votex body kit (Votex is a division of VW) that includes larger side sills, a new rear bumper, and a front chin spoiler, the 337 looks aggressive yet subtle in its only available color, Reflex Silver. A small "GTI" badge in the old style font resides in the grill, while the rear also sports the old-style font for its badging. VW's long-standing accesory hatch spoiler is standard equipment on the 337 as well. A chrome sport exhaust pokes out from under the rear valence, making the car seem just that much more aggressive. The 337 edition does lack the 25th anniversary edition's smoked headlights, tailights, and side markers, however.

Interior
Sporting real Recaro sport seats wrapped in black cloth with red stitching, the interior of the 337 is indeed retro, harkening back to the original GTI's Recaro seats and red on black interior. The shift **** is a modern rendition of the "golf ball" shifter found in the original GTI, although it now denotes a sixth gear. Aluminum center console bits and some aluminum on the steering wheel stalks match aluminum pedals with rubber studs for grip. Black and red is the theme in the interior, with black floor mats with a red edge and red font that reads "GTI", red stitching on the black leather steering wheel, red stitching on the black leather shift boot and....well, you get the picture.
