will putting the S under my dads name for insurance possible?
I am thinking bout a s2000. but the insurance cost of the car is what makes me weary. you see, I fall under every insurance's high risk category. so my friend said he wasn't sure himself, but something how I can put the car under my dads name in the insurance, and I can be put as an approved driver? something like that or similar. anyone know anything or the details about that? don't know how it really works or if its even possible.
It's going to cost about the same amt for your dad to add you to your ins as it would you adding your dad to yours (yes it will be lower if you do this). With allot of insurance companies, it does not matter who's name the car is in. Now if your dad puts everything in his name and states to the ins company that you do not live with him. Then you could be claimed as an un-insured driver if anything ever happened. This would mean you were not on the policy as a driver, and not an excluded driver either. Once something happens though, they will want you excluded.

If you live in the household and are not listed as a driver or resident under your parents' policy, and you crash the S, when the insurance company finds out you live there, they can deny the claim and cancel your parents' policy for material misrepresentation (in FL at least), basically meaning your parents didn't disclose to them that someone of driving age is in the home and will be driving the cars.
If your parents do add it to their policy, you have to be added as a driver if you're going to drive it more than on a RARE occasion, or coverage will definitely become an issue.

well...
it helped me out.
my s2k is a "weekend" car and me and my dad are the drivers on the policy (since the car is in my name but my dad was the cosignee)
i think it's like $550 every six months, full coverage

550 every 6 months? How old you you, and where do you live? Thats like less than 100 bucks a month
Iam the same delima. The insurance rate is what is scarying me, I was qouted for roughly 330-350 A MONTH. Thats insane, Iam purchasing the car but i have heard that I can put the insurance under my dads name, we have th exact same name too.

how many cars do your parents own currently?
if its only 1 car in the policy currently, add the s2k to that policy because you will get a multi-car discount which is 600$ off for me. (even though for my 2nd car it is only 450, so 150$ saved every 6months) otherwise, just ask the insurance agent for both scenarios. most insurance agencies don't get paid commission so they have no reason to jack up prices. Progressive was the best up and down for everything for my situation.
i pay 750 for both my cars for 6months, and i am 17. i did inquire about getting full coverage (yes i have liability on my s2k, but it hasn't moved in a few months and in my garage safely.) they said depending on what coverage i want, it would range from 1000-1500$ every 6months. im probably going to go with a cheap option since my s2k isn't worth that much to me. in the event that it is stolen, i really doubt i'd get more than 20k for it. and for liability, im already at near the maximum.
remember, the owner of the car isn't very important. so if you want to put it under your name so you can sell it off or insure it yourself one day, thats no big deal. just be sure that in the insurance, you put your dad as the primary driver of the car, and you as the secondary. that will yield the rates you want, while keeping the car "yours"

This is the longest sentence, EVER!
As long as this guy is over 18, how exactly is the insurance company going to PROVE this guy lives with his parents? Even if he is there 75% of the time and gets all his mail there and even has this address on his ID, that does not mean he necessary lives there. He could easily say he lives with his girl friend, or just any friend for that matter. I have been in this exact situation myself back in the day, and I wrecked. I had no issues at all. However afterward, the INS company required that I be excluded from the policy.

im 19...raleigh, NC
I think my rates were higher when i first got the car but never too bad. When i was with statefarm insurance, it was over $230 / month....then switched over to nationwide and there was a HUGE price difference. We only have 3 cars on the policy (all three of mine) and the rest of our cars my dad puts through his company for tax reasons, so they are on the company insurance.
I HIGHLY RECCOMMEND NATIONWIDE.
I let a friend drive my car....he wrecked it, did $7900 in damages. Nationwide covered it for me and my rates never rose....infact, we just got a letter saying they were lowering our rates due to "safe driving" and they don't consider me a "inexperienced" driver anymore.

it's pretty easy to prove where someone lives. There are pretty reliable, case law proven background and asset check reports that we can obtain quickly that can tell us the place of residence of an idividual. Don't be naive enough to think insurance companies don't investigate things fully....
Some companies refer to them as clue reports.
Don't think an insurance company will let something slide if there's a question as to whether or not the kid lives at the house, if they have an inkling he does and the report backs it, claim is denied.
Also, they can pretty easily determine if he drives the car often. Even if he doesn't live there, if he drives the car very often, he has to be listed as a driver on the policy. Borrowing a car is not using a car every day.
If you want to test the fire, don't bitch when you get burned.
Also, I wouldn't recommend any particular company. It's all dependent on where you live. Rates vary widely from area to area from company to company.
Nationwide, here in my area of FL, on average charged $400 more a year for most people I quoted back when I was an agent. I had a friend who saved $600 a year switching to progressive from nationwide, and I saved probably $500 a year switching from progressive to state farm. It all depends.

how older r u and where do u live?
I looked into this exact scenario a number of years back when I wanted an M3. I was going to put it under my fathers name, it was like 6-7k a year under me. The problem I found was that if god forbid I got into an accident and hurt someone my father could be held liable. Im not sure if this has changed but I definatly didn't wanted my father getting sued for my mistakes.
