Default Mixing paint with clear?

Well, I one time asked how I would clearcoat my carbon fiber hood, because I had a friend who had a bunch of CF, and he painted a bit of black over it. I was wondering how he did it, and what a couple of guys told me was that just mix about 20% of black into the clearcoat and spray away.

Is it possible to mix black paint, with clearcoat? I wouldn't want any crazy nasty orange peeling action happening to my cf hood. I sanded my cf hood down with 400, it hasn't even hit down to the weaves. The hood is alittle green which is why I want to paint it a bit of black.

Any input? When I recleared it, it came out glossy at the same time GREEN.

You know, when I starched my jeans back in high school, people asked me how I got them so clean without them being shiny or fading. I told them I used purple Kool Aid.

Look you have to tint the clear, not add colored paints to it. There is a process for this just talk to someone at a paint supply you would be purchasing your matierals from they can help you out. Good luck.

ok that was retarded.... you can add a color to you clear pretty much any color and however much you want to get the results you are looking for. all automotive paints are mixed from straight colors with each other there isn't a base that you add pigments to so yes you do add the base color to the clear to get a translucent mix

^^^^ That is not the correct way to do it, what you do is mix in a little of the color you want with colorless base coat which is DBC500 in ppg then reduce it as normal spray to cover to get the look you want then let it flash like normal base coat tack it off then put your 2-3 coats of clear on it. thats the correct way.

Clear coat is just like liquid plastic for the most part, you can mix whatever you want in there and it'll carry over to whatever your painting no problem. Although you can also use a kandy concentrate or a kandy intensifier and get the same thing going on, but when you use those, they'll stay clear, and not get opaque.

You can mix whatever color u want in with the clear. Ive done it for years with Zero problems. Its just like buying tinted clear or a candy.

Gotcha, how would i go about mixing the base coat, I already have clearcoat, and i have black paint, so i should just mix a bit of black paint into my clearcoat and shoot away?

or would you suggest just getting a tinted clear? or i wonder how candy would turn out any pics/results?

or what a poster said above, add a bunch of reducer to the basecoat lol

just take the amount of clear u plan on spraying and add a little bit of base till it gives u the desired transparency and spray away. Ohh and add whatever other components your particular clear calls for before shooting

make it easy and just use pearl. They have black pearl.

use a clear mixing/measuring cup. This way u can see the transparency through the container.

reaaaaaally? i already sanded off all the clearcoat, well i'm not at the weaves JUST YET. should I just sand it down 600, 800, 1000, 1500 then shoot pearl for about 2 - 4 layers, then shoot 7-8 layers of clear? or is that overkill.

i have minor pressure cracks that i want to hide/get rid of that's why i decided to sand it down. it seems that a bit of them went away just fine, there's still a lot left.

paint will not adhere to items sanded with anything above around 800 grit paper. Typically u should spray on 600 grit. Anything else and the paint will flak back off. Ok after that just shoot enough of the tinted clear mixture to give u the desired effect that your looking for. Idk how many coats u will need since its a matter of preference. But the final clear coat should be typically 2-3 coats. do 1 tack cpat let it set up for about 10min. Then shoot a slightly heavier 2nd coat so everything is covered, it might look orange peely still after the 2nd coat and thats fine, wait another 5-10min and spray your 3rd and final coat heavy enough so it all flows out and looks like glass. now remember it takes some time for the final coat to all flow out and look uniform. If u spray and come back a few minutes later u will see it flowing out and looks smoother so dont over do it here, its better to have not enough then to much. Wet sanding runs sucks. If you follow these steps u will minimize orange peel and eliminate the chance of sagging and runs.
