Default Importing RHD cars from overseas

So I pretty much decided that I was going to start over with the chasiss cause i did a bunch of amature body work that will now cost thousands to reverse and paint so I was going to look into getting a rhd eg so of course all the ones already in the U.S. are dookie expensive so I start looking into import car sales place's and you can get some clean a$$ rides for like 2300-5000 complete sir motor and everything the catch is that it cost like 1800-3500 to get it shipped but my real question is has anybody ever done this or know somebody that has and what company they went through and if not how can I make sure that I am not going to get screwed by somebody half way around the world. just think it would be tight and afterwards I will be pulling the motor and selling it to recoupe some of my cost so i can drop my setup now into the rhd car.

A friend of mine did this, it cost him something like $8200 canadian for a '92 SiR hatch. I think it started out at $7000 and then the rest was for stuff like taxes and other misc expenses. Some things to watch out for, the importer told my friend the car was in mint condition and sent pics, looked really good, not entirely true, paint was badly scratched in places and it didn't show up in the pictures, the tires were bald (they were supposed to be good) rear brake calipers were seized. Other than that it was like new.

I wouldnt care about that stuff so much I mean tires and **** but the paint would be one of my biggest concerns just cause besides getting into a rhd car that is alot of the reason I am doing it to begin with.

Are there any fees associated with bringin in a RHD car? or is it just the cost of the car and shipping

Well I have one suggestion which is what my friends and I have done......Join the military and get stationed in Japan and when you come back to the states have your car shipped with you......LMAO also google calgary used JDM and you can find a lot of cars on there.......

someone around here imported a rhd wrx and it got kinda dinged up on the way over. like there were scratches and dings around the body like on the hood and quarter panels. maybe just depends on who you deal with. would be sweet tho.

I've heard its hard as hell to import a car from japan. Different safety standards that the cars have to live up to. Alot of the times they get sent back.

its a long process and sometimes a headache... most people that can afford to do it end up buying something else.

luckily I got my car cheap and with papers... just be careful. make sure its something you really want to do, the price of the car is only the begining to a money pit. I'm happy though, I guess in the end, thats all that really matters.
