Default A reason for the hump???

I haven't managed to find any type of info about the "hump" that is on the ZC hood. I'm interested to find out if there was a reason for the "hump". Did it serve a purpose?? The only thing I can think of is hood clearance issues. I had very minor clearance issues with my CRX after the swap that were fixed by removing a portion of the heat shield. The only problem area was the drivers side edge of the valve cover which looks like it would have lined up with the "hump". Does anyone know what Honda's reason for adding it was?

You already know the reason:

"with my CRX after the swap that were fixed by removing a portion of the heat shield. The only problem area was the drivers side edge of the valve cover which looks like it would have lined up with the "hump""

Clearance for the DOHC ZC motor.

That was only a theory I came up with on my own. I was looking around the net to try and confirm my suspicions but had no luck

I have a question,
If you swap a b 16 into a 91 crx, will it clear the usdm hood. Is that why the JDM hood has the hump. I ordered the innovative mounts swap kit. Are those made to position the motor in a USDM car so it will clear the hood.
I gues I'll find out once I install, but I need to know if I can just get a jdm hood or do I have to cut n fab?
Thnks

I have a B16 in my CRX the Hasport mounts that I used positioned the engine so the only clearance problem was the heat shield material rubbing the valve cover. I cut a rectangle shaped piece out of the heat shield where it was rubbing and now I have no contact between the engine and hood. I think I remember reading on Innovative and Hasports site that their mounts position the engine so that a B16 or B18 will clear, not sure about the B20 though.

min has o insulation either haha, it's a cf, so I was a little worried about fabbing it.
That's just sound insulation rite, not heat

No its both I believe. I'm pretty sure it helps protect the finish from heat damage as well as, act as a damper for sound. Not 100% sure though.

vtecb18c: Wow, I'm a little suprised that you had clearance issues on the other side. I guess its not all that suprising though, just goes to show how much one can differ from the next. (I did manage to get hit 2xs in the front driver side. T-boned both times)

Actually, the hump only has one function. And it's purely cosmetic.

I own an EDM CRX, and my car came with the DOHC and hump hood stock.
There was zero difference when I swapped a Civic hatch hood on my car without hump.

The webbing on the underside of the hood is virtually identical.

I believe the key lies in the engine mounts, more than in the hood.

The only ones I hear experiencing "issues" like these are Americans. Over here we swap hoods all the time without problems.

Wow, I never realized how much the timing cover sticks out on the DOHC ZC.

I used the zc hood to get a tiny bit more clearance on the driver side of the valve cover, for a GSR motor.

I also had a stock hood with the webbing cut a bit, and it rubbed the VC a bit, with the ZC hood I cut a bit of webbing but no more rubbing. BTW the rubbing/contact was in the same area as the hump.

I also had a CF SIR syle hood with tons of clearance, but it just didnt line up with the fenders and bumper

Thats where I thought most people had the problem. This is the first time I have heard someone mention an issue with the oil cap side. Maybe hes using an aftermarket filler cap?
