Default To use a block guard or not. What is the answer?

Some people say to get a block guard cuz they do alot for the money you would spend on one. But others say leave it alone. What are the pros and cons of using a block guard?

I have one in my d16a6.
I think it's suppose to help cool better, and keep you from blowing the motor and cracking a sleeve. I put it in when I did my head-gasket.
I feel it does cool better now, but I don't know about the rest, I don't race.
I think it's well worth it. If I had the $, for sure I would have got re-sleeved.
If you plan on running allot of boost and compression, a block guard won't help you as much as a sleeve job. I think that's what people are getting at.
But I'm not doing any of that. Wait till someone who is boosted chime in.
Are You N/A or boost?

From what I have heard a block guard hinders not helps the engines ability too stay cool. If I remember correctly the block guard restricts the coolants flow through the water jackets. The only time that I have seen them used is in high boost applications they allow the engine to hold more boost without damaging the sleeves. I'm not sure if they would be useful on a naturally aspirated engine. I guess the support of the sleeves cant hurt (unless you have cooling problems)

block guards wont help your car cool what so ever. block guards desrupt coolant flow in the water jackets.

OP if your not doing a high HP build, stock sleeves with NO block guard will be fine. stock sleeves are part aluminum and they like to expand. the block guard most likely is a different type of metal than the outer sleeves and will expand differently at different temperatures.

cliffs: blockguards are a waste of money

I've been using a block guard I bought off of ebay for the past year or so now, and have not had any cooling issues...

they are completely pointless unless they are welded in or custom made for the block!!!!!! you cannot expect a one size fits all product to fit and perform correctly into an unfinished cast product... you may be supporting one cylinder but thats it. read this

Like stated before, it's a waste of money, it doesn't help anything at all really. It does not help cool the motor at all. Had one awhile back in one of my motors, and it had over heating problems, and left hot spots, took it out and it never over heated again.

i got grand vitara pistons already installed in my motor. I have ls pistons but i dont feel like takin the block apart again to put them in. Does anyone know if the stock d16a6 rods are strong enough for 10lbs of boost?

the vitara pistons should be fine, not sure if you actually got them from the grand vitara or if you got the ycp vitara's. the ycp's have special oil ports to allow for better flow, on stock rods (the size of a sharpie in width) i personally wouldn't recommend more than 6-7 lbs, but that should still be more than enough to beat a n/a b16

i've seen first hand what not using a block gaurd will do to a piston
when the sleeves gave way the piston rocked in such a way the conrod broke the skirt and when it broke completely through the piston broke in two pieces i do have pics on my other computer

BUT to be honest this was a turbo d16z6 with a 75shot
