is a k20a or k20a2 worth the money?
hey guys i am debating on motors for my 96 civic and i was going to get the B16A 92-95 (SiR-II) motor but i think i should save up for a little while longer and go with the k series engine. i would like to get your oppinion on what you think of both of the engines (pros and cons.) and if you have done a build with the b or k series motors i would like to hear from you. i plan on installing a turbo also.
i have only done b series swaps but even with what i have now, i really wanna go k series...they are defenetly worth the money...the k series has bigger displacement than every b series (but the b20) which means more power off the bat...and honda engines have just gotten better they keep stepping up their game so the K obviously has newer improved and more reliable parts in it....the b series is 20 years old and there is not many more ways to make your motor "original" anymore but with the k, there is a big window of opportunity to make your sh*t your own....but on the other hand, there is anything and everything for the b series and the parts are a lot cheaper...i know the k series can handle boost, but ive seen the b series put to its limits and they held up amazing so thats another thing to take into consideration...but in all honesty, if you have the money to drop, go with the k series
def, hold out for a K but if u said ur gonna turbo it, that isn't gonna be cheap. this may make me sound like a hypocrite but u think about building a B and turboing it for roughly the cost of a K20?
Trending Topics
k series is useless think of all the $$ u could put into a bseries for what you'd spend on a k20 swap...you could double the power from a b series for the same or less $$ than a kseries swap. they're pointless unless ur rockin a show car. IMO that is

"A little while longer"?
So you have, what, $2,000? But you're thinking of saving up another $5,000 or more. And then you want to turbo it too.
Not to mention you're starting things out with a $200 '96 LX auto that you still want/need to do an auto to manual swap. I would imagine a $200 LX might need some other various work too.
I say start with the B-series. Ideally you should get one the age of your car or newer though (that makes sure it's legal, though the specific law just says the car must get the same or better emissions).

No, it's not worth it, not at all.
10k for 200whp @ 161ft-lbs of tq with a custom header and custom exhaust = "LOL"
This guy knows what's up:

H2B ftw

While I personally don't think shortening the trans on such a large motor is a good idea (you'll get raped on highway mpg with an ITR trans on an H2B adapter plate on an H22A), an H22 or another motor in that area is nice.
Or boost it an F22A1 or something similar - you can throw down like 250 ft-lbs of tq. on stock internals.
You can blow it away on stock internals for 1/2 the price of a K
You can blow it away on aftermarket internals, fully built, with 500whp for 3/4 of the price.
Boost K's unless they come stock
- and even then, if it's in an Si, boost them too.

dumping 10k into a car that is worth 2 thousand bucks is a joke. I mean cmon.
Its a excellent motor though, but Id say unless your in a good financial position and older yea, otherwise use some common sense.

What Civic is actually worth enough to put 10k into besides a newish one? Anyway youre still spending alot no matter how you do it. Old+built motor, New+mild work. The old car will be cheaper to build. Any car is technically a waste of money.

EXACTLY.
It's a 8-12k dollar swap in a 1-3 thousand dollar car. It may be worth it for an autoX car or a drag car that you plan on dumping lots of money into, but it's certainly not worth it on a daily driver or any remote form of a budget build.

i just baught a 96 lx manual that had been rear ended for 750 !!! so i can take everything i need out of that car now. i have 4300 that i can spend on a motor as of right now because i just baught the other car for parts.. so i think i will go with the b series. just on the simple fact that parts are cheaper
Take it from someone who has a boosted K just sitting in the garage.........If you want more bang for your buck then Stick with either D/B-series. K's get too expensive in the long run....

you just answered your own question if you thought about it more.

If you only got 43 in the bank you should consider saving up some more money like necessities before dumping your life savings into a 96 economy car--
not trying to be a douche but just telln ya how it is

k series is to much of a hassle. you have to cut your engine mounts to make it fit. its way to much work. stay with the b series. get a b18c5 and they should keep you going. and in the long run if you want turbo it to. you'll mobb on everyone
