how far do people go at an AutoX
Inspired by the race shoes post,
How much work do you put in for 3 or 4 runs? Do you Change tires? How about wear a fire suit? Have you hauled your tires and also an EZ-UP? I am not poking fun. I am just curious.

I once re-wired my alternator on site to finish the day.
Shoes and gloves? Yup.
Tires/wheels changed? Yup (before my trailer days).
EZUp? Nope.

A 5 hour drive (which is not at all a lot compared to the hard core autoxers going all over the country) was probably the farthest I've ever been to an autox and that was when I ran the divisionals in '99. During those days I would try to make an event every weekend if possible and that always meant driving for a few hours to find one. Always carried the race tires in the car along with plenty of other stuff and an ez-up on occasion, oh and the race shoes
. Needless to say, the car was always full.
Now I've become very lazy since putting on the magnetics on my car before going to grid is a lot of work and the 45 min drive to turner field seems a little long.

I got a 12.5 hour drive to Washington this Friday, then in Sptember a 3 day drive to Kansas.

The last two years I was in deep. I would drive anywhere to run, and it paid off (see trophy wall of fame at home). This year I went to Atwater NT as a co-driver, and I'll do the NT this weekend, but I've not focused too much on this season. Most of my time has gone into the new car. I usually bring my 10x10 EZ-Up so a few of us have a place to hang out.

Shoes - Yes
Gloves - Nope, prefer not to wear them for auto-x
Suit - Why bother for an auto-x? Nope
EZ Up - Boy don't I wish!
Tires - Yes
Raleigh NC to Ft Myers Fl for the Pro... Drive down Fri, drive back Sun after runs.
Raleigh NC to Topeka KS for ProFinale and Nationals... Week long stay. Did this twice.
I'm mostly track driving now... only do my local club's avto-x events (www.thscc.com) and the occational NASA-VA auto-x event.

Shoes- Yes
Gloves- Yes but only because I am used to wearing them
Fire Suit- Ha! The last time I saw someone wearing a fire suit at an auto-x we laughed at him
EZ up- No
I drove out to Topeka last year but outside of that 3 hours is the farthest I will go.
Drew - Who has a real hard time driving more than an hour for an autocross . . .

A fire suit? ****, I'd be dead by now. In SoCal we race alot at Fontana and Norton AFB. Both have 100' temps in the summer. I'm praying for a cooling trend this weekend.
Anyone drive to do three autoX events in one day? Us in NorCal know about that. Setup and run 1st group in Marina, blast over to a GGF or Oakland for mid morning run & work. Make a dash for Sac, run then do breakdown and cleanup. All the while changing tires at each event! I haven' done it, but local autoX board has people who have.
I have done the Sac on Saturday then to GGF on Sunday but THREE in one day! I would like to meet the person who pulled that one off. You would have to run the first event with a full tank of gas to make it to the third event. We are fortunate to have so many event in the area to do two events in one day but three is just plain nuts!
I generally do not go to autocrosses that require me to spend the night (unless I'm the event chair and I'm setting up on Saturday). Just not worth it financially for 3-4 minutes of seat time. Since I started doing track schools heavily, autocross is just something to do when there's not a track event.
I'm fortunate enough to live within 10 minutes of both of the local clubs event sites. Twice a month, I get to autocross within 10 minutes of my driveway. Its pretty handy
I guess it just depends on how competitive you are in your class. Since I've been bumped into SM, I'm generally 2 sec. behind the leaders so I don't go too stressed with my setup. But anything goes when your out for the win.
no shoes yet, because i have large feet. gloves-yup. tires-yup. ez-up-yup. sometimes we'll hang out and bbq, so we'll bring the things needed for that too. gotta love a h/b.
Shoes - yep
Gloves - yep
Fire Suit - nope, only people I see doing this are the Karters and some formula car drivers. Once a GT4 sedan driver when it was freezing cold @ Marina.
EZ-UP - nope just the the folding chairs, but if I had one I would
tire changes - usually
3 events in one day is impressive. I can only manage 2 if the run groups work out (3Com-to-Marina or vice versa).

Well how about how far people go driving normal - I always wear driving gloves whenever I drive...it just feels wrong without them. Plus leather feels better on the Team Voodoo aluminum shiftknob than bare skin. And how about putting the loops of shoelaces back through the lacing near the toe, so they won't accidentally catch on the brake, gas, or clutch pedals.
For autocrossing, once I get the car built up I will add racing shoes and tire changing to the gloves though...

Wrestling shoes. That is a good use for those old things. Someone talks smack about you hitting a cone, then you just go over and lateral drop that guy
Or Hmm he has wrestling shoes, I'll keep my comments to my self.
I remember trying to drive and manage my fuel. I would get it down to the proper amount of fumes to drive to the site and do 4 runs and get it to the gas station. But my wife would jump into the car on Friday night and complain that there is no gas. She would fill it up. And "say I did you a favor...."

Bwahahaha
That is why my wife doesn't drive my car often
She knows how **** I am. Although she loves the looks and stares she gets when driving my car.
Wrestling shoes = $15 at Sports Authority on the off seasons
