This is for a friend, and he wants to do it so I told him I would see if H-T had a write up on it. After checking the FAQ I came here.
Your right it does look cleaning hense the reason he wants to do it.

i dont think there is a write up here about it but there is two ways to go about it. You can just take out the pump and all the lines, but you have to loop the lines on the rack with a resivor to keep the rack lubed. Or you can swap out the whole rack. I got my non-power rack out of an std hatch for my sedan. They just bolt right in but you need to get an alignment afterwards.

all you need is the manual rack, take out all the PS stuff and put the new manual rack in, for reference it will not work the other way(ps rack in non ps car) because the hole in the crossmember is larger on the ps car. but you should be able to put a non ps rack in the ps crossmember

that is true, i was running the looped setup until i cracked the rear crossmember. i went to the junkyard and got the crossmember and it had a nonpower rack on it so i just swapped it all out and did new outer tierod ends

Yeah this I think would be the easiest way is to just drop the whole rear cross member and swap in one from a non PS car.
