Default computer problem

ok guys i got a question. i have 1997 civic ex. it had the y8 motor in it and it was about to throw a rod. so i picked up a y7 off a friend real cheap. i installed it and it runs good but has a check engine light and wont rev past 5500 rpms. im still running my vtec computer on the non-vtec engine. so i tried puttin a y7 non vtec computer in it from a dx and it starts but shuts off automatically i have to give it gas to stay running. any ideas guys???
