Default new car questions

jut got a 1998 accord w/ 114000 miles. one of my buddies told me he heard that if you dont chang the timing belts on the accoed engines every 60000 miles the engines go. any truth to this? the accord is a lx 5 speed, not sure if that matters.

nope not true, it's just "a rule of tumb" to do it at that miles, seem tons of cars go over 100k some wayyy over 100k without the timing belt changed (yes accords)

The timing belt replacement is supposed to be done at 105k. Yes, some do last 150k+, but if you risk it and the belt snaps, you'll most likely need to rebuild the head, since the valves will be open at the wrong time and the pistons will smack the valves, bending them. In my opinion, it's not worth risking it.
