Cam Timing

I've read alot of threads that say B20/LS VTEC timing will always be off.
if so I am just wondering what setting should I use if my B20 runs on B16A head and 00' ITR cams? Block is B20B stock.

Do want to learn the right way to do things and what to check or just slap it together and cross your fingers?

I want to know about the right way. Read some numbers do it and cross fingers don't work for me.
I've searched and read most topics but I perfer more details
