Default 2008 si engine failure

My friend at work has a new 08 SI all stock and on the way home from work his #1 rod let loose and put a hole in the block. Is there a known problem with these engines? Will Honda warranty his engine. Only has 6k miles Thanks guys

if he wasn't beating on it then thats a pretty freak incident.

I'd say he over rev'ed it.

No issue with motor that I have heard. The only times I have heard of such an issue is when someone mis-shifted and over-rev'ed the motor. We have had a couple people shift from 5th to 2nd and blow their motor. In this case, your friend might be screwed.

The ECU readouts will be the tell.

Good luck

Hell I went 6th to 2nd and my motor lived, I caught it before at around 7,800 though

$5 says its that. of course the guy will play stupid at the dealership, until they pull the history out of the ecu.

I haven't heard of any spontaneous break downs from k's either.

why would the warranty cover a mis-shift?

Would this "friend" happen to be YOU??

A breakdown of that magnitude is by no means "common" among these engines.

Sounds like your "friend" has some explaining to do.

We had a civic come in a few weeks ago for a blown engine. We read the ecu and saw that he overrevved going from 2nd to 3rd (went back to first at 50mph) he hit 9800 RPMS and kablooey! Heres a couple of pics of his 3rd plug... enjoy

oh BTW...we warrantied it!!!! Only cuz it was our former svc directors son or something

does the si not have the 1st gear lockout like the b series did? i know that in my gsr you couldn't put it in 1st above a certain speed, so there was no way to shift from 2nd to 1st after redlining 2nd.

This is news to me.......

I have never heard of such, and I am on my 3rd ITR....

I remember Toyota implementing something like that on the Celica GTS, b/c so many people were mis-shifting b/c of the new 6spd

Yeah, I noticed the first gear lock out too. I went from a GSR to the new SI and it seems so much easier to mis shift in the SI, but it does shift a lot smoother

The Si has the lockout feature for first gear...but if you mis-shift with enough force you can still jam it into first

Actually its easier than you think for someone new to driving this car. Especially given how close the gears are to each other in the Si.

Im willing to bet more than half the people in this forum have missed the 5th to 6th shift at least once or twice.

I have done this a few times, shifting from 5th to 6th and hitting 4th instead. Luckily I have caught it each time and not hurt anything.

I am going to have to be much more careful with the ACT Prolite flywheel I just had installed. The engine seems to rev quicker with the lighter flywheel and I can see myself breaking something on a mis-shift.

It sounds like someone mis-shifted and is trying to play it off. The only way to get rid of the data logg is to reset it but a honda-tech has to do it. Or you can trade one of your freind for there ecu and pray they werent red lining much 2.

Besides, I havent heard any problems with the k20 of this magnitude. Alot of tranny probs but never a K problem. The only other people that blew anything on the K20 admited to abuse. Besides teh K motors are godly when i comes to taking abuse, but by all means there not invincible.
