Can an 89si trans interchange with a 90-91si trans?
I need to find out about any potential issues with buying an 89 Si trans as a spare for my 91 Si.
I know the 89's have a slightly smaller clutch than the 90-91s do. Are the flywheels different?
Could you put a 90-91 clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate into an 89 trans and it be virtually the same as a 90-91?
Are there any other issues I should be aware of like axle seal size?
Thanks.

if you are sure the 89 trans is actually an 89, then the transmission is 100% interchangeable with your 91 trans.
here is the deal.
88 transmissions have a 190mm flywheel and 21 spline input shaft.
89 transmissions have a 200mm flywheel and 20 spline input shaft
90+ transmisisons are a 212mm flywheel and 20 spline input shaft
as you can see, the only difference in the 89 to 90+ is the flywheel size, which is irrelevent because the spline count on the input shaft is exactly the same as the 90+ transmission, and the bell housings are the same, so it all fits like stock.
the one that is a PITA is the 88 transmission, because the spline count is different.

To add some info...
To check for year without counting splines look at the end of the input shaft. If it has 0 rings on it its an 88 model, 1 ring is a 89 model, and 2 rings is a 90-91 model.
