Made a Fool of Myself Again

You've reminded me I made a complete fool of myself in T5 on Saturday.
I was driving Group 4 HPDE. In an earlier session, heading for the T3 tower, I thought I saw the guy in the stand move quickly. I put my eyes on him for a brief moment to see if he was going to throw a flag, but he didn't. He was looking the other way, at T4.
My eyes go back to the pavement just in time to see a chunk of Porsche exhaust I'm about to run over...no way to avoid it...it's right at the turn in point for T3, and I am going to hit it. Okay, fine, maybe I won't grab it.
Wrong!
I grab it and carry it all the way through T4 and then down to T5, where I drop it right in front of the gater under Linda Kearney's watchful eye.
Of course, the guy in T3 was looking the wrong way, so he doesn't know I picked it up, and the only thing Linda saw was the stupid old bald guy in the black Integra evidently dropping a chunk of his car right in front of her.
So she calls that in and I get stopped and have to explain to grid that it didn't come off my car. I guess they believed me...I'm not sure. This put a huge dent in my header, close to holing it, and it'll require replacement immediately.
And *then* in a following session, unbeknownst to me, bouncing around on all the rough patches has loosened the hold down on my huge, honking air filter.
I notice a ka-thunk under the car between T3 and T4, but I think I've just picked up a chunk of the sealer that's obviously coming up on the line exiting T3.
Wrong!
It's the air filter come off, and of course I drop it right under Linda Kearney's nose again in the apex of T5.
For the forseeable future, this woman is going to think I'm a complete lunatic.

Sounds like you had a rough day out there.
What kind of air filter did you have on there that came off?
Also, interested in selling that header cheap?

It was a huge K&N designed to go around the velocity horn.

I don't know why you'd want it. It's seriously dented on both down pipes, up to the point that they are almost holed.

I figured it might be somewhat salvageable with cutting/welding in a new piece?

Don't worry George, I almost flipped the race car on Saturday in the race, then on the warm up the following morning a rod decided that it wanted a little bit of air and vacated my block by putting a ~8" escape hatch in the block. Fun weekend.
George, i think you should have gotten out of your car and started spouting philosophy or history. she would have been so mesmerized that not only would she have forgotten about your on track snafu, she just might ask you to father her children.
it would have been the intellectual equivalent of a body builder that flexes his muscles after he walks into a pole or trips over his shoe laces.

Yup, that's it. Pendleton's velocity stack is a little secret weapon that a lot of people will use for a little extra 3-4 HP.
The picture does not do justice to just how huge the K&N RF-1048 really is. :-)
This is the second time I've lost one. They're just big and heavy, and a normal clamp just isn't strong enough to hold it on forever.

George.... maybe its time to do a short thin wire lanyard between a bolt near the filter and the filter. So at worst it just falls off next time...
Damn George....things just weren't working out for you. I second the lanyard connection idea though...mine fell off at one time as well....but it happened on the way to the grid...not on track
A suggestion too... the area where the filter rubber touches the velocity stack... spray it with hairspray before you put the filter on. Then clamp it down.
Works on turbo IC piping couplers... should add some tackiness between the filter and the V stack also.

Summit Point will let you wear shorts.
Looks like our friend is not much for shuffle steering, either. :-p
