Default helmet question

I am looking to get a helmet for auto-x. I am also planning on possibly getting a bike with in the next year. Is there any way to use the same helmet for both and have the same field of view?

Yea man, without a doubt. I have a bike and my friend does auto cross and he has used my helmets before. I would acutally recommend a full face helmet for both. And don't worry, your "field of view" will be fine.

This would be better asked in the roadracing forum...I am not sure that all autocross events allow M rated helmets (SA is the automobile rating). Check with the organisation you'll be running autocross with - they should be able to tell you. It would suck to get a M helmet and then be told you can't autocross with that.

I occasionally use my helmet for autoX. I'm only run in stock class so I haven't run into any problems. Also my helmet is solid color, no race replica graphics so it doesn't attract regulation attention. I remember closed cockpit road race helmets having a different style than most motorcycle helmets. The chin piece is much lower and closer to the face in the auto version. The forehead part is also a bit higher and wider. It still sits on your brow but doesn't come down over it. This makes the "shield" area flatter and it seems a bit more open to periphereal vision. Granted my motorcycle helmet doesn't make me feel vision restricted, there is a difference. And i don't think auto helmet shields lock in the various positions that motor lids do. As for the protection rating, I think there is a difference. Beyond snell and dot, closed cockpit helmets are designed for different types of impacts than motorcycle versions. Something about multiple vector impacts in a rollover situation. Maybe the foam behaves differently? I'm really not positive but I was somewhat in the same situation so just trying to help. You should call up one of the manufacturers and ask or talk to a scca rep. Gluck

Auto-xing with the SCCA requires a Snell rated helmet, (I believe rated greater than 95, 95 being the year).

Riding a motorcycle with anything less than a snell rated helmit is stupid.

Buck up and protect your noodle. The one on your head.

some auto roadracing organizations will NOT let you use a motorcycle helmet no matter what endorsment it has.

so check with the org. before you do anything.
