89 civic dx 4dr AC HELP PLEASE!!!
I just bought this car and the ac does not work. The blue ac light above the switch does not come on. I do not hear any clicking of the compressor kicking in. The blower speed switch only works on 3 and 4 setting. Could there be bad relays? I did change the 25 amp fuse to the condensor fan under the hood fuse panel. I do not see a ac fuse under the dash that is labeled ac. any takers I live in fl and it is blazin hot. Thanks so much!
There are several things you need to check. First is fuses. there is a condensor fan fuse under the hood. There are 2 fuses under the dash. Check your low pressure cut off switch and wiring. If your fan only works on high, you probably need a blower motor resistor block. You also need to check to see if the system is charged. If not inspect condensor, evaporator core, and hoses for leaks. Look at the sight glass on the dryer and see if its a milky white color. If so, your low on refrigerant. You need to also, remove the control head to see if that switch is plugged in. You bought a used car dude, who knows whats been done to it. Hopefully it hasn't been too molested. Check these things out and let us know. You can personally message me once you have enough posts. If not I'll keep an eye on this post.
Thanks for helping me, I really appreciate it! Well today I took off the relays and inspected them. They were covered in the rust and gray crap. I cleaned the contact points as best I could and reinstalled. I looked at all the lines and could find no issued to my knowledge. I cleaned off the sight glass and saw no activity. Before I cleaned the relays I tried the ac again and no difference in idle and compressor does not come on, meaning no clutch movement. Although after I cleaned the relays and reinstalled I tried the ac and for a sec I might be wrong, the idle changed and I thought I heard a click as if it was trying to come on. I could have sworn that the air changed to the slight cooler side when this happened. It was only for a sec. After that I pushed the ac switch out and in and noticed no difference in idle or sounds coming from compressor. Maybe my mind was playing tricks on my. But when I first got the car I checked all the fused inside and out. In doing this the fuse for the ac cond fan under the hood was blown. I replaced it. After reading the legend on the fuse panel cover I saw no spot that was labeled ac. So I put some fused in all the available slots. I have a kit for r143a that I bought for another car I had, can I use these gauges to see if I am just empty? If so which side is hit and which is low? Forgive me I am not honda guru. Any info helps and I appreciate all the help so far. Thank you and have a great day!
Where is the control head? Also how much is a resistor block? Lastly does it mean anything that the blue light does not work? Thank you again!
The control head is the part where you control the heater and AC. You cannot use R134 gauges on a R12 system unless retrofited. I responded to your instant message. did you get it?
The resistor block is responsible for the speed of your blower motor fans. If your fan isn't on, the a/c light in the switch won't come on. You might wanna call your local honda dealer and find out price and avalibility for sure. If you want you can go to hondapartsunlimited.com and try to find it.
So if the blue light does not come on them something else could be wrong besides no freon? Possibly electrical? Is there something else I can check? Man I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate the help! Thanks again

The AC climate control not working on speeds 1-2 have nothing to do with your ac not working in general.
I was having hell with my ac(still am actually)and it turns out that I have a leak somewhere.
Make sure you replace your ac dryer(located behind the drivers side headlight). It's a cheap and easy thing to do. I cut open my old dryer and OMG...that thing look like a baby took a green **** in there! It was GROSS.
While you are at it go ahead and replace the valves in the hardlines coming out of the firewall....that's if your system is completely empty. That also is a cheap and easy thing to do.
Pull a vacuum on the system and check it for leaks. The longer you let it vacuum the better. You can lease the equipment out for free at autozone. You gotta leave a fat deposit but you get it back when you return the goods.
Your system should have oil in it already but it shouldn't do any harm if you buy the r134a refrigerant with oil mixed in it.
After you are done vacuuming the system and checked it for pressure leaks, turn on the car, crank on the ac full blast and charge the lowside(that's the one facing UP toward the hood. The highside is facing the drivers side.
The car should take about 3 cans of freon.
You gotta remember that the compressor will NOT kick on unless you have enough freon in the car. I learned this the hard way too.
Oh and by the way, the condenser fan is the fan on the drivers side closest to the ac compressor. Both the condenser fan and the radiator fan attach to the radiator.

Thank you for the information. I will try what you said. So the drier is the thing that is silver and has a sight glass in it? Thanks I really appreciate the help buddy!
Yep, that's it. Make it your last thing to change too. The less moisture you have in that thing the better.
And be careful with the lines. They are delicate. Above all, do not get over anxious. Take your time and do it right. My anxious mistakes are costing me bigtime now

There is a nice troubleshooting flowchart in the FSM. You can find a link to DL it in the FAQ.
I'd suggest following the flowchart or just taking it to an A/C shop to get their opinion.
Sounds like you simply may be low on refrigerant, but I'm fairly certain that the blue light not coming on is an electrical issue.
