Strikerflo does it again! Redline Time Attack Rd 6 - Summit Point
Despite some pretty treacherous conditions that saw 10 cars go off the track (and when I say go off, I mean "BAM!!!!" as in smacking the wall) I was able to walk away with an ever-so-slightly messed up DC5 and a First Place Street Class FWD win.
There was a lot of competition from some very experienced locals that made things that much tougher. Heading into the last round, it looks like I've got a 30 point lead (1 win's worth) over the next closest Street Class FWD competitor in the National Points Championship, but seeing as how it's COBB's Mazdaspeed 3, I can only hope and pray that they don't show up to any more events, lol. TopSpeed's Subaru took the overall championship it a nail-biting finish.
I'm still kinda exhausted from the fact that we trailered 13-straight hours each way for this event, leaving right after the awards ceremony. That, and I've got a seriously sprained thumb/wrist from hitting the tire wall...you'd think that I've watched enough F1 to know that when someone hits the wall, they're supposed to take their hands off the wheel...stupid me...steering wheel spoke jammed up in between my thumb and index finger really hard and has made using my left hand a nightmare (I'm left handed...go figure).
Anyway, I'm just glad I made it out in one piece after seeing all the carnage. Here are a few pics...some have been stolen, lol. Many thanks to everyone who made it out for the event, it was a real pleasure getting to meet everyone. Things like that made the trip so much more worthwhile.
Right after the "jump"...notice the suspension travel on the car...

looks like Rt615s
street class + trailer = weak.

LOL...not to sound like a jerk, but check the Bridgestone decal on the rear quarter panel.
As far as being "weak" for trailering my car, I can fully understand your comment, but any idea on what it'd cost for a towing bill from the track to 13 hours away from home? Any idea how much it would cost to rebuild the shocks after driving over 1500 miles on overloaded rear suspension from all the tools, spares, equipment, etc? Any idea how 4 people are gonna fit into a 2 door car for a 4-day trip?
After watching my teammate lose a week's worth of work and over $1500 in towing and rental car money while chasing down his damaged car at the track, I decided it was a good idea.
Call me weak if you want, and I'm sorry if I get defensive about it, but I'm just trying to be smart about things.

street class is for street cars. I believe its even in the rules the car must be registered for the street and driven to the circuit and retain catalytic converters.

its a race track not a circuit we aren't in japan or Europe.
And just because it is a "street car" doesn't mean that it has to be driven on the street.
Would you want to get stuck with a $4,000 plus tow truck bill?

No I wouldnt. But there is a place for a dedicated trailered race car. Modified class.
Of course hes going to win. Whats the challenge of using a full blown race car to compete against a bunch of true street cars?
Perhaps I misinterperted the rules and percieved vision of a "street" time attack class. I would have guessed the intentions were aimed at regularly driven cars for competition.

it's street registered, street driven, has a cat, passed emissions and has almost 80,000 miles on it.
I dunno what the fuss is about. So I pulled the interior from the seats-back? That's probably 20 lbs at the most. I don't get it.

let em hate, props to being able to afford to tow, and i wouldnt drive 13 hours in that car to get on a track.
i guess all us motorcyle racers are suckers for trailering our bikes to the track.. should just get a big back pack to hold tools, ez up, s forth and so forth

Thanks. To be honest, I can totally understand where you're coming from. I was under the same impression for a long time, too...but when disaster struck a few times, both with my buddy's rear end exploding on him and with my serpentine belt shredding on the track, I decided to take some precautions.
As far as street class is concerened and the whole purpose of it, I can see where some people could throw a fit about how a car is prepared. The thing of it is that I see much more highly modified street cars showing up to these events than mine. In fact, some come that way out of the box, so how can I complain?
With the way I see Time Attack, there will be modified street cars competing...no one wants to see stock cars with stock wheels and stock components. That's why there's NASA TT and SCCA classing. It's the street class, but it's not the showroom stock street class. I do however think that a line needs to be drawn somewhere. I remember when I was about to cry when a gutted EG hatch showed up with a built K24...but as much as I wanted to complain, that was still within the rules. (I was still lucky enough to win anyway)
I guess my biggest defense is that I read the rules, understood them, did my homework and did as much as I could with the budget I had. The car is still under-modified to fit the rules...I'm running 180 treadwear tires...could go down to 140...could put a cage in per the rules, could build the engine/supercharge/turbocharge it...I could remove the heater core, add in a ITR roof and a carbon fiber hatch, etc.
Could I race in modified? Possibly, if I showed up with the right tires. But to be honest, most of those cars are much lighter, AND/OR have a ton more horsepower.
I'm not a fan of arguing and with the wins I've gotten this year, I'll probably get bumped up to Modified, which will result in probably over $10K-$15K that'll need to be invested into the car...right now with my current setup, I've got about $8K in parts, so it's gonna hurt. I'm not saying that you don't have good points, I'm just making sure that I'm as competitive as I can be with my limited budget.

Motorcycle racing is insane...let me just say that.
I wanted to get a bike, but I realized I liked all my vital organs and my mildly-overweight physique. The latter of which also kept me from getting a bike...don't wanna be "that guy" giving everyone a plumber's crack show every day.
