Figured that some of you over here hadn't seen/heard about the new car build that Conover Motor Sportshttp://www.raceconover.com is doing for me. The car is being built primarily for SCCA ITA competition with an eye towards crossover legality to NASA PT/HC.
Before gutting/cage/etc but with a test fit of the suspension and race wheels/tires
Out comes all the interior, glass, engine, tranny, and most of the body panels
Test fit of the race seat and mounts

Custom cage courtesy of Chris Schimmel with Competition Cageshttp://www.competitioncages.com/
It'll have a Speedway style rear bar... here Chris is welding in the custom mounts
Dry-break fitting for the 22 Gallon Enduro style fuel cell
Wiring will be inspected and unneeded wires removed per SCCA IT Rules
All the undercoating has been stripped off
The chassis will be painted with a white epoxy base paint on a rotisserie. The body panels will then go on and the exterior painted Laguna Blue
The car is currently at with the painter. Feel free to check the build site here for updates: http://www.raceconover.com/buildcivic.htm

I really am amazed at how many people weld without a hood, even just tacking.
Besides that, subscribed because I wanna see how it turns out. Sounds like it's going to be nice

Thanks everyone
I'll try and remember to get over here and update the thread with more pics once it's back from the paint shop. You can always take a look at current progress on the Conover build site.

Ex 5-speed...those are rare cars. I'd like to have one for a weekend autox car, but finding one in good condition is next to impossible.

Sorry missed that... the Snap-On Crud Thug was used. You can also try tightly wound wire wheel type attachment on an angle grinder. It's not fun, easy, or fast but the final product is the shizzle.

True. I lucked across this one with a smoking engine for relatively cheap.

That's the way they roll down in NC
B/C of the timeline we're working on, this was the fastest way to get everything painted and assembled. The paint guy, Bernard, is basically next door to CMS and normally cars are taken to his shop for paint. In this case it just wasn't practical since the suspension is in pieces getting painted and new bushings pressed in...
edit:
For anyone wondering, the chassis and cage as shown above tips the scales at 733#.

Laguna Blue is going to look awesome.
Tell us something about the engine/trans setup if you care to.</TD></TR></TABLE>
I'm hoping the color looks as good as I think it will
Engine/tranny are the regular "IT Build":
.040 over w/ stock type pistons
head milled for .5 bump in compression
intake and exhaust ports gasket matched 1" into the head
Stock intake manifold, TB, cam, rods, crank, etc
AEM Filter on a stick
Stock tranny with 4.7 FD and OPM LSD
Stock flywheel
Stock ECU and injectors
Good for mid 120's on a Dynapack
edit:
engine is the stock D16A6 it came with.

Today I received some more photos... these show the beginning of the white base coat going on.

The fender still has some cosmetic rust repair that will be taken car of before final paint work is completed. The rear fenders will also be "rolled" per IT rules. Also, notice the end of the custom rear Speedway swaybar mount.

Below is a good shot of the rear swaybar mount again along with a good view into the rear cage area. The massive hole is where the fuel cell will be mounted.

The top coat of paint should be going on shortly!

Longer wheel base, bigger brakes, same weight as a Civic Hatch/CRX = faster ITA racecar

What he said ^^^
It's got the same engine, tranny, and suspension as the other Si cars but runs larger front brakes at the same weight. What's not to like? Well, except for that fact they're harder than hell to find in the first place

FYi, i'm pretty darn sure the wheelbase is the same. i'll have to flip through my FSM when i get home, but the hatch and sedan are practically the same dims, except a little longer over hang in the rear, and about half an inch taller.
but brakes are killer. i'd love to do the same.

You're correct. Sedan and hatch share the same wheel base. I think both Richy and I read the previous question about the sedan choice as "why did you choose the sedan over the CRX" as that's the question I get most... probably partly b/c I sold my CRX (which used to be Richy's) in order to build this car.
I didn't choose the hatch for a couple reasons... (keep in mind this is for IT)
#1-It's been done before
#2-It's not going to be any faster than a CRX (which I had)
#3-It won't "fix" any of the issues with the smaller brakes (wear, fade, long pedal, etc)
