Default 1988 Civic DX upgrades? (first time owner)

Hi i'm new to the forum and first time Honda owner just a few quick questions, i'm currently running the 1.4L d14 automatic and i was wondering what is a common engine that is an easy swap with my welding? i was thinking b16b but there aren't many of those around and they're kind of pricey. any engine help would be appreciated also, are there kits to install power steering into it or am i just going to have to live without? haha

thanks for the link, i read through it and instead of swapping out the motor i may just upgrade my d14. which leads me to my next question, does anyone know if i can take my automatic transmission off and put a manual transmission on? is there any welding or cutting or can i just drop the tranny out and bolt a manual tranny on? does anyone know if there's a thread on this somewhere or any information on this? i haven't found anything

yes, its easy to convert to manual. search auto to manual swap dont forget to hit the archive button in the search . everything bolts on its an easy swap. if you do have a d14 its probably carbed which limits your motor choices unless you run a whole lot of new wires. your best bet is a dohc carbed zc

thanks i heard on the d series engines that the connecting rods are fairly weak, should i just go buy a stronger set of connecting rods or will they be ok up to a certain amount of horsepower?

IMO opinion if your wanting horsepower the best bang for your buck is a 160 hp B16A (motor out of 88-91 SiR) shouldn't cost you more than $2k for everything if you were to do it yourself

yea our connecting rods suck, as well do our transmissions due to weak shift forks. IMO the easiest swap would to be a turbo'd D series [the most common is the D16z6] or if ur an oddball like me do a NA d series lol. since everyone wants B series you can usually pick up a D for a dime a dozen.

I would do a D16a6 my next build is going to be an A6 in an EF 4dr hopping to get around 40MPG and hit low 15s or high 14s at least thats my goal. It is easy for people to over look these when doing a swap you wont make the same power that a V-tech B20 would but the price and ease of the swap is worth it. Honestly if it were me I would sell the car and look for a 5 speed EX or SI model with the A6 already in it that way all the hard work is done for you and in the end it might save you some money.Stomping some one with a SOHC non V-tech NA D16 is just plain cool.

i agree with what was said by the previous comment, everybody wants b series or h series etc but if you can get a decently fast d series for cheap and run good times and still get 40mpg d16a6 gets my vote

a little update on what i've been up too, i bought a parts car that had a d16a6 and a 5 speed. tore into the motor a bit and the rings on the 4th piston shattered in the block and gouged the heck out of the cylinder walls and it would only stay running for 5 minutes before it starved itself. so i took the trans off and now i'm in the process of swapping the tranny to my d15 along with the rad from the d16 because the rad off the d15 has been corroded to all hell and half the fins are missing on the engine side. i took the seats from the parts car (its an si) and the wheels and tires and those are getting swapped over tomorrow not going to bother with power mods, i'm saving up for either a b16a or b swap or a k20 or h22. it all will come down to what's available when i have the money
