My Jdm Zc pass smog??
NEW UPDATE!!! I went to get my car smoged and the guy said my car won't pass smog because it's a jdm motor and it's not a D16 or D15. He said the 95 civics came d15 v-tec or d16 non-vtec. He said he could pass it if i pay $170
Ok I Have A JDM ZC single-cam, everything is stock. I just need some reassurance that my car will pass smog no problem or am i wrong?

Someone correct me if i'm wrong, which i may very well be, but in california doesn't the engine have be available in a USDM vehicle, IE B16A is a legal transplant because the US got B16As but the US never got a ZC and as a result even though in terms of actuall emissions it would probably pass with flying colors its not a legal swap due to the fact there was a never a ZC in the US.

I had a OBD0 SOHC ZC non VTEC in a 90 Si and a OBD1 SOHC ZC VTEC in a 93 DX and I was able to smog them both in California.
These engines are designated as equivalent engine replacements so they're legal in CA, although in the case of my 93 DX, technically a smog ref certificate was required but in three smog checks no smog tech ever noticed it was not a stock engine. Since it's a SOHC basically it just gets ignored.
Now I live in a state where I can have whatever engine I want as long as the basic smog equipment is there and it passes the sniffer. And that's how it should be.
"Japanese Replacement Engines
Used engines imported from Japan can be used as replacement engines as long as the engine being used has been identified as functionally identical to the original engine. Please refer to the engine importers catalogue to determine if a replacement engine is legal for installation in your vehicle. "

You may pass the sniff test. But, to pass it legally, the engine should be available in U.S. market and its the same year of your stock engine or newer.
For example, B16A is available for EK Si. Then, you can get it barred on your EG to be legally smogged.
You will need to be barred if you swap in a different engine than stock. Plus, JDM engine usually fail for visual because it doesn't have EGR.

I had a zc non vtec In my ef sedan passed with flying colors. It looks stock most places dont check the stamping on the engine and if it looks like OE then it wont bring up any doubt

Yeah, get another engine, if you wanna stay SOHC try to get a D16Z6, or see if D15B Vtecs are smog legal, i think they might be now, not sure. Sucks for you guys in california, but those are the rules you have to play by. You could pay him the $170 and have him pass it, but i don't know what would happen if you got pulled over.

i know this is an old post but i am having a similar problem with my DOHC zc swap. the bottom end is fresh to OE spec. and the head is as well but with cams and a mild p&p. when i took it to get inspected it wont pass smog. i live in Pa. the guy said to put a new cat on it but i dont think that is the problem. i could be wrong but it seems to me that i am dumping fuel and have a real stinky tail pipe, haha no pun intended. any insight would be greatly appreciated. i dont want to spend money on a new cat if that might not be the problem.
