--- Did you not take it off the car yourself, or know anyone who did? Whoever did should know what year the car was. That's all you really need.
If you don't have that information available to you, i would have to say the only way possible is to figure out what plugs are different between the 2 and go from there.

Here is how to check whether the harness is OBD2a or OBD2b:
Compare these pictures:
OBD2a ECU Plug Pinout:
OBD2b ECU Plug Pinout:
