Default Mechanic says I have a non-vtec but its a 2000 EX Manual, is this possible?

I had it in the shop to see what he said about the billows of smoke after it sits. He says valve guides/seals and says "if it were mine I would just drive it" and that the only thing I will notice is the oil consumption.

He is putting his name on a list for when a low mileage engine comes in but says to me that my engine is not a vtec, yet every time I do a search online for a motor, the only options for my "8" vin number are 1.6 vtecs.

It does not say vtec on it, but I thought all the EX models (94-00) had the d16y8 vtec

do you have the engine code? and is there a silineoid on the head with a green plug?

Someone could have swapped the engine before.

yeah i had and ex and its vtec.... unless u got scammed whenever u bought it and vins were switched which is a grim possibility and unlikely but the only way i can think, unless the engine was swapped for a non v-tec one... look for the solenoid and its the best way to tell vtec verses non

The valve cover on a 96-2000 EX will not say Vtec on it. I think it was only 92-95 models that had the vtec valve cover on the SOHC. If your engine is a d16y8 then the block was a vtec block. Also behind the left side of the valve cover should be a little roundish thing that is called the vtec solenoid. And if your car really was a EX than the vin should have EJ8 somewhere in it. If you have none of these things, than someone got you.

Hmm, I cant see from that angle if it has a selenoid, although it looks like it has a wire going there.

That is a vtec engine. Your mechanic must not know much. See the green solenoid on the right side of the engine behind the dizzy.

u can tell a vtec motor by looking at the valve cover.

the plug wires on a vtec motor are in the front.
and the plug wires on a non vtec are on the back of the valve cover.

How does it suck that it is a vtec?

Thanks for the help guys.... he just test drove it, nothing more.. and based his assumption on the fact that it didn't say vtec... He is well trusted and known in my city, so its not like hes a moron just because he made a quick assumption after popping the hood after the test drive.

Well you do have the correct intake manifold for a vtec head.

Check the head code. Just peek at the head fromt the front and post what you find. Also, check if there is a solenoid, you cannot miss it unless you are completely clueless about Hondas.

just like i said.

you can tell a SOHC just by looking at the valve cover.

There will be an engine code on a flat plate on the front of the block. I marked this with a red square.

There will also be a solenoid behind the valve cover. I marked this with a green circle.

Click the image to see the markings.

D16Y7s have the wires on the front. As does the D16Y8, D16Y5 and D16B5. So all the US SOHC Civic engines for '96-'00 had spark plug wires along the front.

So saying the VTEC ones have spark plug wires along the front is kind of very misleading sincwe the non-VTEC, VTEC-E and VTEC CNG all do the same for 6th gen's engines.

Not all cars are going to come with the stock engines.

No. I can't see the VTEC solenoid. There's a photo where you can see it in this thread though:

It appears to be VTEC, you can not only see the green oil pressure plug which plugs into the base, but if you actually blow up the picture you can see its cylindrical shadow, which appears to the left of the valve cover breather, due to the angle it was taken at.

@ OP:
Why didn't you/don't you look at the damn block code like the FIRST RESPONSE told you to do.

It's to the left of the manifold when looking at it from the front, and down a bit, almost where the transmission meets the engine. It's approx 1" x 1" and has the engine code on it. If you listened to the first answer you could have avoided this thread becoming a major pig [freak].

Get your block code instead of wasting everybody's time.

that's an excellent shot of a of a D16Z6
OP please tell us what code is on the block.
or post a picture taken from higher up looking straight down like the link NOFX posted
i saw a Y8 intake manifold, and the green oil pressure sensor but no solenoid.
maybe Y7 head swapped on?

Yeah, but that's def. a Y8 IM, I was thinking the same thing exact thing as you, but if you zoom in real close on the second picture, there appears to be a cylindrical outline there of the top of the VTEC solenoid.

It would be a lot easier if the OP got the block code...

EDIT:
Or maybe it's just a shadow rubbing me the wrong way...

Just in case someone else comes across this thread:

And there was no need to thread crap this with the picture of the UPS truck.. is this not a legitimate question on my part? isnt the whole point of a forum to get information and help others?

Thanks again.. and yeah, thanks for the stamp location, its a D16Y8 =D

Edit: Sorry to have made this confusing.. I didn't intend it to be..
