Default Engine smokes at High RPM's and after I let off clutch...

Yeah, I bought a '91 DX hatch for my first car. I would post up pics, but if many of you know me, I have 56k.

Anyways, the car is old, but is in amazing condition. I bought it from a dealer (Yes, I know...) I am worried about it, the guy that sold me the car told me that a woman had it and she couldn't drive stick so she traded it back in. This kind of scared me but didn't turn me away. As I got on the freeway, I noticed this white smoke coming out. It wasn't a lot, but enough to make me noticed. I was kind of getting on it, but not too bad just enough to get on I-85.

Then today in town, I was at a stop, the light turned green, and I push in the clutch, as I start to level it back out with the gas I notice smoke too. I wasn't riding the clutch hardly at all, just a little bit.

I have to ride my clutch though, it has an extremely high let go point. It's weird.

Anyways....I thought it was a head gasket. I've been reading in my Haynes book and it doesn't really have this symptom.

Please, any help, direction or advice would be amazing. Thanks for reading this.

if you suspect a head gasket check your coolant, might have oil or bubbles in it.

blue/gray smoke is oil - maybe suspect valve seals or piston rings...piston rings the car will smoke almost all the time, esp heavy accel.
my valve seals were leaking and it would only leak after i romped on it and was on decel - when hitting the gas on decel it would puff smoke out.

its a fuel problem. when ur engine is at a fast rpm and you let off the gas the rich fuel doesn't burn for the difference in the fraction of the second delay time that you let off the gas. also check your compression in each cylinder, might be rings

Thank you very much! This is very helpful. As of now it is pouring outside so I cannot check the coolant, but I will tomorrow. I'm starting to think it's the rings.

But, the dealer I bought it from also said it had this problem where the car would just randomly shut off because too much fuel would get to the engine due to the fuel relay messing up.

How much is it to get rings fixed? (I'm kinda strapped for cash, mommy and daddy didn't buy this for me) I would do it myself but I have no tools. My Haynes book can only bring me so far

Wow, I'd take it back unless they told you about the smoke before the purchase.

Otherwise, find out what the color of the smoke is. Sounds like a headgasket to me but could be something else.

You can also do a compression test to find out a little bit more.

As far as the fuel relay issue, he's right about that. The main relay is a common weak point in these cars. You need to re-solder a few points on it or get a new one.

That's something totally different. I'd suggest check your fuel injectors, one or more may be stuck open.

if it's any help honda quoted me just over 100 bux for a full set of rings for my d16z6 that i gotta rebuild... if you replce rings replace the rod bearings too unless you're hella careful... and even then i'd still do it (i am doing it... lol) and check tolerences and what not.
