Default Picked up #213 this weekend it was a nightmare....

Here it goes....I'm not great at telling stories so whatever I miss I'm sure Keith will pick up.

Introduction:
"The guy" = person I bought the car from
"We" = me and my boyfriend Keith (fastvteccl)

On Friday morning we were supposed to fly to get the car on standby passes (my dad is an airline mechanic so we get them really cheap) my dad calls me at about 3 in the morning to tell us that the flights are getting booked up and we could leave at 2:30 instead of 8:00am. We could not take the chance of leaving that late because the person we were buying the car from is in the military and he was flying in from Cali to meet us. So we hopped into a rental car at the airport $260.00 later at 7:00am were on the road. 9 hours later and getting lost twice we finally get to our hotel. I call the rental car company because we were told that we had to drop the car off at 7am but nothing opened on Saturday morning until 9am. I had a blowout with them and got them to knock $60.00 off of our final bill and the extra day they were trying to charge us, yay. We call the guy and tell him where we are and he offered to bring the car to us. We see the car, threes a few dents and dings, no big deal.

Saturday morning we wake up, take the car back and the guy picks us up to take us to the car. We get to his house and I take it for a test drive, everything fees great, on the way back up the driveway to his house the speed sensor goes out, again no big deal, we all know this happens in Honda’s/ Acura’s, the guy got pretty upset and apologized. Ok, so off to the bank we go, the transaction went smoothly and the car is now mine.

We head off to central Florida Turbo as they were the only people to touch the car and before I bought the car it was confirmed (it's a fully built turbo type-r). As we all know there are certain consequences to take when you are buying a car from someone that has already added modifications. We are driving down the highway and the car kept stalling on me so I had to pop the clutch every time it stalled. We get to CFT to have the car tuned and the people there are SUPER NICE guys, I told them what was happening and here is how the afternoon started....

I pull the car around back they check the spark plugs; yep of course I need new ones, not to mention there was a scorpion underneath the spark plug cover that was burnt up. They check the wires and I needed new wires too. The car is still acting funny. They are looking over the car and notice the MSD ignition wire is chewed up so we had to fix that and we needed a new distributor. By this time now the car wont start, the battery is dead, we got a new battery. Still nothing is wrong with any of the modification that was put on the car which is what I would have expected to go wrong. Great we are ready to put the car on the dyno. The car is running really well putting down great numbers on pump gas everyone is happy. Then the lights start flickering WTF now we need a new alternator so we are looking for one at the shop and they can't find one. We then start calling around, another customer at CFT offered to take Keith to the local auto parts store. Nobody within the vicinity has an alternator. We called the guy and he found one and offered to bring it to us 2 hours away but by this time one of the people at CFT found one that would work that was still good. So they proceed to put that in, by knows it’s around 12am. They get finished with that and everyone is ready to leave its now around 2am. The "tuner" at CFT was nice and drove us to a hotel then picked us up the next morning to complete the tune on C16.

Sunday morning all is well we drive back to CFT and start the tune on C16. About 45 minutes into the tune the car is overheating because the fan sensor went out, whom knows how long ago. Now the head gasket is leaking under 17lbs of boost so we stop for the day and were ready to head home, just needed to stay out of boost and everything would be ok.

We are heading home and the car will not go over 3800 RPMS because it went into "safe" mode because the speed sensor was bad. OMG are we ever going to get home going 60 MPH? Well we didn’t have to worry about that because I wanted to stop and get something to eat and ended up on the side of the road. YEP the car stalled on the exit. So we get out and push it in the grass. Needless to say we still have about 6 more hours until we get home. I knew right away it was the alternator. I have no tools; I can't leave the car, and Keith HAD to be at work the next day. It would take about 3 hours on the side of the road to fix it. Our only option is to tow it. We call AAA and they tell us since we were in Florida it would cost us $5.00 a mile instead of the cheaper rate it would have cost us if we were in another state. Nice huh? In the mean time we are being stared down by an alligator that was in the swamp off the exit and every Honda in the town is stopped off the side of the road with us offering help to get us home.

Ok so here comes the tow truck. dude gets out and says ok, where do you need to go we say NC and he says oh no I cant drive there, let me call my buddy. His buddy says ok and is on his way. Ok everything is good now. The other tow truck gets there and we start loading the car up on the tow truck. The driver was awesome and very careful loading the car. Now we hear someone yelling at us, omg its the homeless guy on the corner holding his cardboard sign telling the tow truck guys they are doing there job wrong. At this point I am tired, worn out and hysterical. I thought I was going to **** myself it was so funny! Got the car on the tow truck safely and off we go.

The ride home...well IT SUCKED! The driver got lost in Georgia because he couldn’t find I-26; he and Keith were fighting about where he needed to go which took about an hour and a half off of our time. We finally got home around 3am.

The guy I bought the car from paid for everything that needed to be fixed but for the tune and is paying for half the tow bill which was $2054.00.

Today...still having minor issues, we replaced the alternator last night and put in my drivers side "drive shaft shop" axle. I ordered my speed sensor today that should be here tomorrow. Not sure if we have an alternator problem the only thing I'm going by is taking the negative terminal off the battery and the car stalls, doesn’t necessarily mean the alternator is bad. It could be some wiring or I didn’t leave the car on long enough for the alternator to fully charge (this is what I was told by a reliable source). I'm going to a buddy's house tonight so he can check to voltage. Then I'm taking it to another buddy's place to put it on a lift so we can see everything that’s going on and to replace the head gasket.

And the saga continues.....I will try and keep everyone posted on updates, if i dont get to it Keith will.

With all that happened, at least you got back home without more trouble than that, as bad as it seems, things could always be worse. Hopefully it'll be nice and reliable soon.
To the seller of the car for helping you out by covering the cost of some of the problems, some people would leave you high and dry in a situation like that.

What a story...... I'm glad that everything turned out to be ok or at least semi-ok.

When are we going to see some pictures of the R?

What a day.... I'm sorry. You guys are troopers. Maybe your two should take a day and just relax, do nothing involving the car. Then you can dive back into it.

The guy has been really cool about the whole thing. I actually thought he was going to cry as one point. Kudo's to him for sure.....

I forgot to mention that the car was sitting for about a year but not his fault. his brother was "supposed" to be taking care of the car while he was in Cali.

That's one hell of a story! Even though the car sat for a year that is some serious bad luck with basic maintence items. All the problems are minor but when you are on the road the simple things become major.

Now that everything is said and done you can look back on it down the road and laugh. Glad to hear you finally made it home with the R.

Props to CFT for helping you out and staying late.

I hope the first thing you did was check the 7.5 Speed sensor/alternator fuse underneath the dash, its nutorious for going bad which is directly correlated to the speedo not working and the alternator not charging correctly (hence stalling while driving).I have actually fixed 2 other 01's with this problem.

I hate to say it, but I would be willing to bet the fuse is just blown and once replaced would have gotten you the whole way home no problems..

Yeah, I checked the fuse and it was good but I replaced it anyway. Maybe the 7.5 fuse isn't enough?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I checked what I could see of the wiring, it doesnt look like the wires have been chewed up (mice) and there isn't any corrosion. Could be a short? We will see more when I can ge it on a lift.

HMMMM> thats usually the fix.
have you replaced the main relay? i can't remmeber if it starts to go bad or just takes a dump.

if there really are nibbles through the casing i would remove the whole engine harness and inspect/repair it.
