i just did my first autocross this weekend and it was awesome. i did 5 runs, then later on i did like 3 more. i had 2 more available, but i ended up stopping because my turbo was about to fall off, and also i wanted to save my tires. i started worrying about my tires b/c i dont have a job and i can't get new ones right now, but i was curious as to how much tread you actually lose during an event?

Depends on the car, driver, tire compound, course, and temperature.
Sorry, this questions isn't really answerable.

I saw 1/4 of my total tread get used at a practice day on my OEM tires (Bridgestone XGT V4), but that was in 99* heat, without watering the tires down, and 20+ runs. I also managed to melt the tread blocks together and crack the sidewalls from over heating them. Terrible tires.
My RT-615 Azenis have lasted through 14 auto-x events, 2 practices, and 3 HPDEs and have 3/32" of tread left from a starting total of 8/32".
So, 4/32" of wear if you overheat a crappy tire by being a n00b and overdriving them, or minimal wear (less than 1/32") if driven in a reasonable manner, for a single event.
R compounds wear significantly faster.

Azeni's overheat fairly easily... at least mine do. Getting a bit old though.

you still didnt mention what kind of tire you are running...
and where do you get 10 runs at an Auto-X? is that the norm

I've hard everything from 100 miles to 1000 miles for 4 runs.
It all really depends on driving style, how smooth you are, what pressures are in the tires, your camber, toe, suspension etc....
All my sets of Azenis (RT-215s and RT-615s) have lasted well over 40 autocrosses and 10,000 street miles. They went from 6mm of tread to 2mm of tread in that time. But I've been told I'm a smooth driver and I tend to brake in a straight line (4 tires grip better than 2) more so than my competitors.

i'm runnin kuhmo ecsta spt's .. i have like 40% tread on em i'd say
and the event i went to .. it was 5 runs .. but at the end for an extra 10 we got to do 5 just for fun runs
cooling down tires helps save the life of them?
