I work with a couple of AWS certified inspectors - the only deals they've been able to find have been on ebay

1) I'd have to bet that 90% or more of certified welders I've met (20+ years in the field), have never even seen any of the AWS code books. You don't need one to become certified.

2) AWS has MANY code books, not just one. The most common is D1.1, which is for Structural Steel. It will cost you hundreds to buy the newest copy. Welding codes are not cheap. Even API 1104 runs about $300, and it's only about 40 pages long. Your best bet is to find a copy of whatever code you want...on CD.

3) If you're wanting to become a certified welder, all you need to do is find a Certified Welding Inspector, and they should be able to set you up with a test. You will need to decide what position/procedure/process you want to become certified in. In other words, being a "Certified Welder" means little more than having a drivers license. It just means that you performed ONE successful test, on ONE day. It doesn't mean you can weld anything in any position, and it definitely doesn't mean you are certified to weld anything.

For example, lets say you just want an easy test so you can brag to people that you're "certified." You want a common AWS cert, so you weld up a piece of 3/8" plate, in the flat position with 7018, and a backing strip (not open butt). This piece will get you the certification for limited thickness of materials, even if you use the same position, rod and base metal. You will NOT be certified to weld horizontal, vertical, or overhead. However, passing the vertical and overhead will certify you to weld all positions.

In other words, there are "essential variables" and "non-essential variables." If you change one of the essential variables, you must certify to weld with the changes in variables.

Look to pay about $300+ for just one AWS certification.

Your instructor wants you to get a certification, and is going to charge you for it? What a scam!! I had several stick certs before I got out of high school...and didn't pay a dime for it.
