Wierd axle/tranny problem
the car is a 94 civic 4dr dx AUTO with abs i guess
this isnt my car and i apologize, but this all of the information i am able to provide for you guys since i am still at work i havent seen or touched the car since the other night
it is my frirends wifes car and i guess the driver side axle needed to be replaced
i went and bought a driver side axle for him and it had a abs ring on it (i am assuming the dx has abs? if not ill pull the ring off when i get there)
ok so he replaced the axle in his drive way and the previous axle had a abs ring on there as well
he said the tranny fluid was full so he didnt put anymore fluid in there
when they drive the car around it shifts fine but after it warms up i guess it doesnt grab gears anymore....basiaclly it drives as if it is in neutral
but when they shut the car down, park it, and restart it, it will drive normal again for a lil bit then it will not grab gears and drive like he threw it into neutral
like i said before i havent seen or touched the car at all this is the information he has provided me
i just want to know what would casue that so i know what to do when i head over there
i have no experience with automatics or even D series at all
i dono if they put the axle in wrong or whatever (doubt it) does the car have to be in the neutral position to put in the axle? again this is a AUTO
ive never even heard of a car doing this though either
thanks for looking and for helping

Only the LX with ABS and EX sedans had ABS

In the owners manual it will tell you how to check the transmission fluid, different manufacturers use different methods,i believe with hondas the car needs to be warmed up first.

That sounds like automatic transmission failure.

Nope, you put the axles in the same as a manual, for the d-series they're actually the same axles between auto and manual. ABS ring is fine too, i run automatic ABS axles in my 5 speed non-ABS civic.

not an axle issue.
Sounds like either the wrong type/level of fluid, or worn clutch packs causing it to slip.
I'd do a ATF service(drain and fill with Honda ATF-Z1) and go from there

I just realized it was you
Whats up Rob!
Yeah, it does matter if it's overfilled and Honda autos ARE picky with the type of fluid.
They engage gears via clutch packs, as opposed to planetary gears. Too much/too little fluid can foam and cause issues.
Check the fluid when the car is warmed up, engine off, on a level surface

ok just got off the phone with him and i told him to tell me exactly what went on
they got the axle in
drove the car down the road no problems
on the way back the car stopped catching gears in D3
so they put it into D1 or whatever
another block from that the entire tranny stopped catching gears and all that was happening was the RPMS would just go up as they stepped on the gas
they pulled over turned off the car gave me a call then started the car back up again
the tranny 'fixed' itself and began working normally againt til they got to their driveway and it just started acting the way that it did.
they repeated the turning off the car and turning it back on and the tranny would work for a few yards if that then stop going into gear
that tranny on its way to being a blown tranny or what?
