Default crower 403 or brian crower (BC) stage 2's for my b20 motor

building up a b20 motor and going with around 11.5:1 compression. ive got all my other parts execpt cams and valvetrain. which of the 2 cams in the heading should i go with? any dynos or experience? also, i just want to run valvesprings and stock retainers, anyone know the specs on the springs from brian crower so i can find other aftermarket springs with the same stiffness

I haven't heard much regarding BC2s, but I can say the 403 is a strong camset for a stout street motor.

I ran the 403's on my old b18a with 10.0:1. It was definately not enough compression, but i dont think you need to worry about that with 11.5:1. Make sure you get a good tune, my car would idle like a V8 on steroid's and I had to up the idle to 1200RPM to get it from dieng on the street.

Even at 10:1 comp i had decent gains

1990 CRX Si
1992 B18a
i/h/e
clutch
403's
mild port
valve springs and retainers
shifting at 7200RPM

ran a 14.3 in the 1/4 on street tires.

13.9's on slicks.

Untuned.

good personal experience vantage .

thankfully both bc and crower are pretty cheap brand new, but i might actually be leaning toward the brian crower st 2. i cant find any info on their valvesprings so i can find other aftermarket ones and not have to use retainers.

you said its not enough compression.. did the car really hurt in the low rpms as far as power and driveability?

I never dyno'd it but the "butt dyno" felt at least 5lb's weaker. You could definately feel more torque in my friends unmolested b18 EF hatch.

That being said, after 5000rpm i would pull like crazy.

Im sure with tuning and more compression you could easily recover any torque u lost from the cams.

Also, i too have been looking into a b20z swap, that is after i sell my lifted 2002 tacoma.

Ill be looking for a similar setup i had before with a few exceptions.

B20z
b18b1 IM
Port and Polish
crower 402's
cai
JDM ITR 4-1 header
2.25" exhaust
and the biggest part TUNING

If you are going to be tuning your car, and already have to get valvetrain for the 403's, i would step up to 404's.

People here and on g2ic are getting 170whp / 140 wtrq with a similar comp ratio and 404's, with some tuning.

The only reason I am going 402's is because for me, the valvetrain installation was a lot more expensive than i thought.

I believe the springs/titanium retainers were around $400? install/porting was another $700?

I hope to save by dropping the head off and ONLY getting it ported and polished. This way i can install the cams myself and not need to worry about valvetrain.

im actually more concerned with valvesprings than retainers. i *think* all b series retainers are the same, and they are good for 8500rpms. im really looking for my max power and tq to be around 5000-7000 rpms. i dont want to have to rev the car toward and upwards of 8000 with my ls trans for daily driver, otherwise id make a b20 vtec out of it

vantage, my original build idea was just about the same as what you want to do, then i started realizing how shitty the low comp of the b20b would be and how much i dont want to have a car with 130hp. i should go hit up g2ic see what they are doing over there, i havent been on there in a while

Just be careful with all that compression, and keep the RPM's low as planned and get it tuned.

B20 blocks sound scary to me

lol scary to me too dont worry. ive got a sleeved 2 liter block in my basement i could use, but id rather sell it and have it pay for my cams and pistons in the stock sleeve b20. ill have the laptop hooked up before i even start the car for the first time, it will be tuned like crazy

Are you using obd1 or obd2?

What are you planning on tuning with?

i thought crower sold steel retainers as well. you might just go that direction. i was just at their page the other day and noticed they are having a factory sale on a ton of their stuff.

and they make top of the line stuff. i laughed the other day when used 98 spec type r cams closed on ebay for $355. for $430 you can have brand new 63401 cams that are a slightly stepped up version of the CTR lobes. i wonder if many people have even noticed the deals they have going?
