Default power steering. safe?? no fluid.

Hey guys i bought a 5th gen type sh about a week ago and today while driving i noticed SMOKE coming from my car. I pull over to check and i see this fluid dripping onto my cat. and thus creates the smoke. I rush home and on the way back i noticed my steering wheel got tighter and tighter. I pop my hood to find out that im completely out of Power Steering FLuid (i had enough a few days ago). I buy a bottle of genuine honda Power Steering fluid and dump it in. start it up and within seconds im completely out again.

I have a leak but im not sure how i can drive to my friends shop safely.

I took off the power steering belt but im not sure if its actully safe too drive this way.

ps: sorry for the long story

yeah, its fine.. just a lot stiffer, drive around the block and get used to it first. you'll notice at a deadstop or very low speeds, its hard to steer. (i had to use 2 hands to steer) but at cruising speeds, its somewhat easy.

It will drive fine like that, but you'll want to find the leak. Since it's dripping on the catalytic, I'm going to assume that one of the hoses to the VSS is at fault, but there is no way to be sure w/o getting under there.

I dont know how safe driving daily for extended periods of time with no PS belt can be safe at all.

From my previous experince with driving around with no PS belt for extended periods of time, I would start to get this loud vibration sound after a week or so, and it was completly random as well.

Im almost certain it was the same thing that caused the harmonic vibration that spit my crank pulley bolt out.

Now looping the lines on it, would have a diffrent out come.

what do you mean that you cant drive w/o power steering belt.....you dont have to have power steering belt. The only thing thats going to effect is the amount of muscle it takes to spin that wheel.

Long ago I had a ls swap in a civic swapped with power steering, wanted more power so I removed power steering and it drove fine for 2 years then I sold.

There was a day long ago where power steering was an option like power windows.

Taking the belt off does NOTHING except make the power steering not work, which makes it much harder to turn the steering wheel...that's it.

The gears inside the rack do not vibrate without the belt and neither do the end links. Your car was messed up and that's what caused your vibration.

Then would one of you **** heads care to explain the vibration that I got with no PS Belt on?

There was no prior work done to the PS part at all, expt the belt was removed.

Did I say you cant drive with out it, no I didnt you @sshole.

Without proper circulation in the PS line, the PS fluid will not properly circulate, and can lead to parts of the rack not getting the proper ammount of fluid, causing the vibration I recived.

Now aparetnly looping the lines will stop that, but, if you still want to jump in and talk **** about what happen. Im sharing my own personal experience with what happen with no PS belt on for a prolonged time.

You wanna challenge that, go ahead, what the hell do I really know. Well I know that this place is filled with @ssholes.

^looping the lines is the same thing as taking off the belt, just taking out a bunch of hoses.

like Brandon said, the vibration was NOT from taking the belt off.

I drove around with the belt off for MONTHS before i finally looped the line.

To the OP, Just take the belt off, it will still leak fluid, but it will not have the pressure to push it out.

Acid, here we are again with you concocting some bass-ackwards theory.

I'll be the **** head that explains the vibration you got, you and your inexperience messed something up while installing your engine, and the end result was that **** got messed up. I'm not too concerned with that at all, so let's leave it there.

With no ps belt, you get no pressure to the rack. That means that when you turn the wheel, you're relying on the vacuum you create in all the passages in the valve body to move the fluid rather than positive pressure from the pump. The fluid still circulates through everything in the rack.

Acid, your input is much appreciated, but you should post these "theories" as suggestions up for discussion rather than posting them like they're scientific law and then getting mad when people call you wrong.

No.

You did something to you car by accident, or something else randomly happened with the car. Period. Taking off the belt would not cause a vibration.

You think this place is full of a-holes because you post incorrect technical information and people call you out on it. That's all there is to it. Try to get out of your little protective world you live in and realize that not every little thought you have in your head is true in the real world. Accept that you don't know anywhere close to everything and only post things you know to be fact and the a-holes will magically disappear.

Spellcheck found 4 misspelled words in that one post of yours alone.
