Default state reff certificate required.... comptech intake not carb legal?

First of all I know i could have avoided being pulled over but since the R's look gay with the front plate on, I didnt have mine on... So I was on my way to work yesterday morning crossing the bridge like I've been doing for the past 2yrs..i see the CHP that i see everyother morning.. sitting in the same spot,( i guess to see if any "fastrak" runners go by..) well i passed him up, he got behind me, stayed on my a$$ for a min., i was gonna start to merge to the rt lane to let him pass me ... then he turns the lights on and pulls me over... comes up to the psngr side window and says "aaahh there it is" (pointing at the license plate sitting on the lower rt side of the dash) i didnt see the front plate, then says, where is your Fastrak transmitter? I didnt have it on the car, but do have an account with fastrak... then he says.. Besides the modified exhaust, what other modifications do you have in the car? I tried to play it stupid and said that the engine is all stock.... well he then says, pop the hood and let me take a quick look.... poped the hood open and said... I thouhg you said it was all stock... i said this is how i got it from the dealer i bought it from( which is True) then he says, well the header has the carb sticker so its legal, but the intake is not.. and i tell him well i know that Comptech intakes are carb legal( mine does not have a carb sticker, not sure if any of them do)... so he writes me up for, 1, no front plate visible. 2, no fastrak device visible 3. having modified emissions. Puts a sticker on the back and says that i have to go to a state reff to have the vehicle inspected...

so what i did when i got to work, called the number on the back to make the appointment, well the offices are closed until further notice due to the BUDGEt crisis here in CA...im like WTF??? so i tried calling the CHP office where i was pulled over in, and i went through 3 different people, finally the 3rd one said, "I wish they would have told us that". so he says let me get ur # ill call you back and find out what to do... I called the dealer that sold me the car and told them what happend..and see if they will pay for a carb legal or stock intake... he sends me the information that says comptech air intakes are 50state carb legal... so i call the CHP office back and the officer i spoke with is busy, call back later, hes in a meeting... call back at 5:01 and the office is closed????????? WTF????? so i cant drive the R until its in compliance, but cant get it inspected because the offices are closed?

what to do next? drive the R and take a 50/50 chance the same chp can pull me over and try to impound the car because to him its not emissions compliant? wait till my court date to drive it ( 9-17-08)
get a carb legal intake (aem) with the sticker on it?

damn i didnt realize my post is hella long, but i feel better letting it all out now

I don't have the CARB EO Sticker on my Comptech intake either so I just carry around a printed out copy of this in my caR.

Correct. The parts side is now known as CT Engineering.

itr1148 this is what i was going to say earlier but not in the same words. i cant tell you what to do but you did admit things..im all about seeing itr's looking good and well taken care of. ive seen some that look fine with front plates but we like our cars clean ill agree.. but if you can take the plate off for show's tracking etc then just leave it on and avoid the hassle

There is actually a sticker for the comptech intake. My car also came with a comptech intake when I first bought my car. I proceeded to email comptech asking them to send me over a sticker. They required that you send them a picture of your vin with the intake or something I think. Then once you email them that, they mail you the sticker. Hope this helps.

I would say your chances are pretty good running into the same CHP officer. They were out in force today on 101.

I never heard that you can't drive your car until it is emissions compliant.

Does the ticket say so , or the sticker itself say that?

You know you live in cali and you know their laws are stupid. But, they are the laws and you're required to follow them.

Why attract attention by not taking 2 minutes to bolt your front plate back on (especially in a Type R)? And you know that every aftermarket part must be carb approved, so why not have that documentation with you?

I see a lot of these threads and while I agree that cali law sucks a fat one, the fault is always because the poster didn't follow the law properly.

the sticker he put on the back reads.
vehicle must be removed from the roadway immediately and may not be driven until in compliance(section 24004 california vehicle code)

i called the chp office today asked to talk to the same officer i did yesterday but it was his day off... so i called back and asked what can i do? she said i can drive it still just to make sure i carry the print out of the intake, i just now need to get the lic plate signed off and ill make sure it stays on...sucks cuz it looks ugly... but damn cali does suck for all these "rules" ... hopefully the same cop wont pull me over again tomorrow, didnt see him today... we see what happens...

Damn Cali for making your show kaaa look ugly with a front license plate. You can always take it off when hard parking for extra points.

WTF is fastrak?

Fastrak is a service by which you dont need to complete stop to pay a toll in the bay area.

it is very similar to EZPass on the east coast (NJ, NY area)

but to keep on topic. Comptech icebox comes with a sticker to put on the intake box. i found out about it before i moved to Cali and also to make sure that i wasnt gonna get pulled over for any of the strictly enforced but bogus crap here in Cali.

I'd say put your plate on, carry your Fastrak with you, and carry a copy of the E.O. in the car. Then if he pulls you over again say that the intake just never came with a sticker but it is CARB legal and show him the E.O. Just be respectful when you point out his mistake and you shouldn't have any problems.
