Default Resonator delete question

Hey guys, figured I'd come to the experts on this one

Car is an 01 A4 1.8T. I bought this exhaust used, here is the maker's website with the item description:

http://goapr.com/Audi/products....html

As you can see, the resonator has one pipe welded on, and one that is a clamp on. This is a very stealth exhaust, and I can't help but want a little more oomph out of it, so I was thinking of having an exhaust shop weld in a piece to delete the resonator, but would like the option to put it back in if desired.

Here are two ways I have thought about doing it:

Red: A straight pipe cutting across
Blue: A U-bend to sit in place of the resonator

But how would I achieve interchangeability? Would I have the shop weld flanges on the end of everything, or have them stay with the same "clamp" theme that the rest of the exhaust has? Any other suggestions on how I could do this?

do the "red" route, have them weld on flanges for both setups and you have your interchangeability!

I was thinking that looks the best in terms of flow, even though inside the resonator I'm sure a similar airflow of the "blue" route is going on.

But do you see near the outlet of the resonator there is a clamp? That's where you can break the exhaust apart right now. So what should I do, have them weld that so it's not removable anymore, then make the connection closer to the bend and put a flange there?

yea.. have them put a clamp on the straight part going the the rear of the car, and on the one coming from the front..

Do the "red route". Also that is a muffler, not a resonator.

What's the difference?

Resonators are a straight through design, meaning you can see in one end and right out the other, in a straight line, typically the jacket doesn't exceed 2"s over the diameter of the perforated inner tube.

Mufflers come in all shapes and sizes, they have MUCH larger casings and often aren't a straight through design. You can buy straight through mufflers however which are very popular for turbo applications.

Ah I see. Thanks for the info

Doesn't look like the angles would be a problem to weld some flanges on the old muffler and new straight pipe so I can swap back and forth does it?

No, thats a fine solution, you will get more power and better response with the "red route", you will also get a significant noise increase.

you can have a shop cut the muffler out, and weld flanges onto the tubing so that the new peice of tube could be removed and the muffler reinstalled later on if so desired.

APR makes a very nice exhaust though, and I wouldn't expect so see much of a gain from removing the muffler.
