bent valve?
loud ticking. or, in my case, the car wont start because all your exhaust valves are bent and all your valve guides are broken so the motor has 0 compression on each cylinder.
the best way to test for a bent valve is to just run a compression check.

i did a compression test...all four cylinders had and held compression...but while i was doing that i noticed that the copper line for my oil pressure gauge was rattling against the alternator....which i think was the noise i was hearing inside the car...thinking it was the head...although the head still makes a slight knocking noise...but that has been going on for a while that i knew about....
You can tell if you have a bent valve after a mis-shift if; the car is having a poor idle, ticking sound, or if too many valves are damaged then the car won't even run/start. Do a valve lash adjustment to aid with the ticking sound.
Ex. one of my friends did the money shift on my car and I thought I had a bent valve because I heard a ticking sound from the head. After performing a valve lash adjustment the ticking sound was gone. The valve train is even quieter now then before.
Give it a shot.
