Default new si owner w/a few questions...

hello all,

just got a nhbp si/coupe/stick/navi the other day and have a few questions.

1) break in period. how many miles? any opinons about rpms? btw, @ what rpm is vtec engaged?

2) do i need to be concerned about the 3rd gear issue?

3) i am really missing the torque/hp of my tl type-s and am thinking about a cai & hondata img/reflash. do i need to wait till after my break in period to add any of these? which cai is the best that won't kill low/mid range torque? will any of these mods null my warranty?

4) where can i get a set of brighter bulbs for my head lamps? i have been used to hd/xenon for years and the stock halogens are not cutting it for me. i don't want to do an hd conversion b/c i know that will null my warranty with the quicks.

5) when i drive over a big bump on my driver side, it sounds like my shock is completely busted. the car had 1 mile on it. is the supspension just that rough?

6) is there a bike rack that won't mess up the spoiler? i am trying to stay away from a roof mount.

i think that's it for now. i really appreciate your time & answers.

thanks!

1A. I smashed on Wide Open Throttle (WOT) @ 200 Miles
2A. Go to 8thcivic.com they have a TSB concering the third gear issue, it will provide which VIN #'s are eligible for the 3RD gear replacement.
3A. Yes it will void your warranty if whatever has to do with the MOD affects whatever breaks. For example you buy "VTEC KILLER CAMS" then boom your valves bend. Then yes. Like i said, if it causes any damage to another engine or car component then yes its voided. (An intake is an Intake, but CAI is always better than SRI vs the top end)
4A. How can HID's null your warranty if nothing is broken? Like i said, if it doesnt affect it then it wont null it. (I got my 3rd gear replaced, when I had my SRI, and yellow DRL bulbs)
5A. Yes, the suspension is that "stiff" compared to heavier cars like your Type-S. My hatchback has a pretty stiff suspension and when I sit in my Si, I feel like im driving a luxury car. So in your case, you went from luxury sport, to family car-sport (lol).
6A. I don't know anything about bike racks, but go on http://www.8thcivic.com and register and start posting there and someone will help you out!.

Enjoy your new si!
and try as much as possible not to follow trucks or anything car thats throwing all these small rocks that will chip your paint in seconds!
Get a clear bra or a Full-Nose Mask bra from the dealer and our interior sucks cuz its black and when someone scuffs it, you're gonna cry! So be watchful! Not trying to be materialistic but if you are like me, and it's your first brand new car and you wanna keep it new for at least a year, then be ****!

I will do what I can to answer your questions.

1. Check your manual on the break-in period. These engines are partially broken in at the factory so it is not a long break-in period. The manual will tell you. As for RPM's, opinions vary. Some believe is the "drive it like you stole it" break in and other believe in the "baby it" break in. Personally, I would drive it normally. Try not to take it to the high RPM's too frequently, once in a while will do no warm.
Vtec on a stock K20z3 I believe is 4,500 rpm? Someone correctly if I am wrong. Mine was reset to 3,000 RPM when I installed the supercharger.

2. If your car is new, I would not be concerned. It is mostly an issue with 2006 / 2007 SI's. If you got a 2008, you are Ok.

3. I would wait until after break-in until doing any mod's to the car. In fact, I would wait until you have several thousand miles on the car before doing any mods. If there is something majorly wrong with the car, you are likely going to find find out in the first 10K miles.

Most people start with intake, exhaust and some do Hondata. If you go with Hondata, your Vtec will be lowered. However, even with these mods you are not going to get the torque response of the TL Type-S.

As for the Warranty, read up on the Maggusson-Moss Warranty Act. The dealer has to prove the mods cause the issue. However, the warrant conditions are pretty clear. These is risk that Honda will void your warranty if you install aftermarket performance parts.

4. Check out the link below. These guys have several options on lights. However, again, your not going to get the brightness your use too without an HID retro.

http://www.automotivelightingu...10_22

5. The suspension is pretty stiff on this car, stiffer then most other Honda's. However, if you are not feeling the same flex on both sides when going over a speed bump, I would have your suspension checked by your dealer. It is possible a dampener was broken during transport. I have seem transport drivers attach security chains to the dampener and struts before.

6. Can't help with this, but someone should be able to point you someplace. I know a few people on this forum have installed bike racks.

Congrats on the SI, enjoy.

thank you guys so much for the info...

1) manual says break in is 600, the dealer told me 1500. i vary the rpms but haven't hit vtec yet.

2) my 3rd gear seems to be fine, but i will check out 8thcivic.com just to be sure

3) i'm planning on a short ram vs a cold air. the owner of the mod shop says they both add the same amount of hp to the si's. i was kinda confused, but i know this guy is legit and know's his crap. they have a fujita on sale for 229 so i'm thinking of buying it and then having it installed after the break in period. then i will do the reflash.

4) i'm thinking of just getting some bright secondary lights/fog lights. that should help?! it will be cheaper and less messier than the whole retrofit.

5) i'm going to have the service tech take a ride with me to check out the thud sound. i thought that something might have happened during transport. there was 1 mile on the car.

6) i think the old bike rack will work. i just hope the spoiler doesn't fall off, lol!

thanks again guys!
