I did the auto to manual swap in March of 2007. Have loved it ever since. If you do swap trannies, try to get a d16y8 or d16z6 tranny. They have shorter gearing (the final drive is shorter.) I have the D16Y7 tranny and the gears are sooooooooo loooooooooong.
The hardest part with the swap for me was getting EVERY nut and bolt needed for the swap. Best to find someone who is parting out a car, that way you get every piece all at once. I already had the tranny, clutch, flywheel, and starter for years sitting in my shed until one day I said "Screw this, I'm going manual." I had all these parts because they came with the engine that I bought from my friend (engine+tranny+ALL underhood components for only $300 with 36,050 miles on them.) Reason I didn't convert at first is because I could only afford to have the engine swapped. Those parts I mentioned are the EASIEST to find. The hardest is the little **** pieces.

Also, when doing the swap, don't forget that you will need to buy an auto-to- manual conversion tranny mount. Buying the conversion mount is MUCH easier than cutting/welding in a chassis mount bracket from a 5-speed civic.
One more thing. You will either need to swap ECUs with a 5-speed ECU, OR de-solder/jumper some areas of the PCB on the auto ECU. I myself am good with soldering so I did the job myself. Very easy and quick job.
Good luck with the swap. Please keep us updated with your progress.

That tranny from that 96 lx will work just fine on your car. I think on 6th gen civics you also have to swap intake manifolds for whatever reason. I forgot if it has to do with a certain trim or what.

You have to swap the intakes for the EX (Si if your in Canada) otherwise you will have IACV issues, on the upside since this is a 6th gen civic you don't need to cut and weld any mounts though, unlike the 5th gens. check out this link for IACV fix info http://technet.ff-squad.com good luck on your swap.

Everyone I know has had to either swap out the bracket or buy a conversion mount for a 6th gen. Even the FAQs on this site show that people had to either buy a conversion mount or weld in a new bracket from a 5-speed. Both FAQs are for 96-00 civics as well. The auto and manual trannies are completely different sizes so I see there being no way of not having to change any mounts
Edit : Now that I read harder, I see that some people did and didn't have to change the bracket or mount. I'm confused. But the 96-00 faq clearly says it needs a bracket... err...

Thats weird, i've never done a 6th gen auto to manual swap, i have done a couple of 5th gen ones though, with the 5th gen there is a pocket mount welded to passengers side frame rail, its back about half an inch further than the manual version and angles upward as opposed to the manual version that sits flat, 6th gens don't have a pocket mount though, they have a mount that bolts to the frame rail. All you need is the upper transmission bracket from a manual, the manual vibration mount and the rear tranny mount. its all a straight bolt on affair. I checked 2 faqs before i posted this too, and i took a peak at some EK engine bay pics i had.

That's the bracket I was talking about. We might have mis-understood eachother at first I think.
Here's a lil picture that I made.

Edit again : Damn.. I saw a pic of a 6th gen and it doesn't look anything like mine. We are both talking about different brackets. You are right. I just wish I could see a pic of a 6th gen close up pic of the upper (top) main mount. After seeing this pic (wish it were closer) that mount isn't mounted the same as mine. 6th gens have it totally different than mine.

Pic of that guy who's restoring the wrecked civic.

Pic of my "ugly" mount/bracket thingy. I don't have that bracket that 6th gens use.. ahh... Now I see the difference.
