Default Cooling problems on a D16A6

Okay last year I had cooling problems where at a stop light/sign my temp would rise to the red and would go back down when I drive again or turn on my heater. It was a easy diagnos and blamed the thermostat and was a easy fix. When I changed my thermostat (Kragen brand) there was a crack in it.

Fast foward to today I am having similar problems but this time when I drive and/or turn on the heater the temp doesn't go back down.

I will be checking the thermostat again ( I will NOT buy Kragen brand again). Hopefully if it is the culprit I will just swap it out.
I was wondering if there are any less expensive alternatives to the Mugen thermostat #19301-XGER-0000? This sheet is $88 from Kings.
Also does anybody know if any of the Mugen fan switches #37760-XK5-00N0 or 37773-XGMR-0000 will work with the D16A6 as I do NOT see a listing?

My next problem is that I don't hear my fan turn on. Does anybody know how to trouble shoot the fan? I also think that is a contributing factor last as well as this year but since my thermostat was working it didn't matter.

haha if u have the same problem i had, and it seems like u do, i did a right up on this. does it only start to over heat when your stopped? if it does and your fan motor works, then its prolly your fan switch. its cheap at auto zone but not mugen...
heres the link to my write up:

Get a OEM thermostat one from Honda. The ones from AutoZone etc are not the same temp as stock.

sounds like its potentially a blown hg. does it only overheat at idle though still, or while driving too? i think thats what you were getting at but not sure. If so, it sounds like pretty much exactly what happened when my car blew a hg. It would constantly cycle between hot and cold on the temp gauge. Turning the fan on not only didn't lower the temp, but i didn't get out of it either. And also the radiator fan wouldn't kick on if i recall. I didnt have coolant in my oil, and i didnt blow white smoke out of the exhaust either. It just kept pressurizing the coolant system beyond what it should have been, and prevented it from cooling properly. After replacing the thermostat and the problem still remained we started thinking something else was the culprit. Eventually we noticed gunky greyish black buildup in the fill neck of the radiator and on the bottom of the radiator cap. we then realized it was hydrocarbon buildup from the combustion chambers leaking into the coolant system, and from that it became fairly apparent it was a hg.

Thanks for all you replies...

Looks like I will go for the OEM Honda if I can't use the low tem fan switch from Mugen. Thanks for the tip 89crxsi89...I will try and trouble shoot the fans your way.

D16SiHatch
It overheats at idle and while driving too! I will check the coolant and oil for any contaminants from either one. Hopefully it didn't blow and/or warp the head.
