96-00 Civic HX fuel economy
Well I recently stumbled across a mint stock 97 Civic HX coupe, 5 speed 113,000 miles, dealer serviced gem that I'm going to most likely be getting in the next week or so.
I've been going back and fourth with my wifey for a while now trying to justify our SUV as being "needed" and at the moment we cant justify it so we talked so more last night and she said "Go for it!! The Forester is ugly anyways!!".
So now I've been looking for some archives on some actual mpg #'s for it and havent found anything other than what the EPA deemed it to get 38-44. Tried searching on here but the search query was "too common" so I just typed in civic and well.......I dont have enough time on earth to sort through that many threads lol.
I think it's probably better than that in some cases so I'm looking for some owners of HX's or people with 1st hand knowledge to chime in and educate me a bit with some real #'s.
Thanks,
Nick.

I know I know, I tossed the thought around for about 2 weeks now and I'm just like screw it!! I added up my mileage a month that I drive (3,000 on average, sometimes more/less) and divided it by my average MPG and I'd save $270+ a month just owning this vs my Subaru!! Not too mention be a hell of alot more excited about having to drive it lol.

Honestly, that's pretty feasable as they only weight in at like 1890-2,000lbs and well how hard does a 50 year old guy who drives a CRX run it?! lol.
I'd like to think that in the future I could do some subtle mods and maybe hit 50mpg with this sometimes but I need some owners to step up with some actual #'s before I can say its possible or not.

I have got up to 65mpg with some minor aero mods and better driving techniques in my Hx. Oh, and that is with a shorter geared Ex tranny, have a Vx tranny to swap in soon, should add around 5+ mpg.
600+ miles per tank is fun
70mpg is possible, thats my goal

Holy ****!!! Really??? What are these "aero mods" you speak of? Also, do you have any bolt ons or is it a virgin motor with subtle upgrades? What octane do you run?

Yeah I was looking at some of those pics. Pretty crazy lol. I'd never make my car that ugly for mpg's but making some subtle changes are ok lol.

I'm curious to see some #'s with a CAI and maybe a catback on it. Should be around 50mpg's with conservative driving habits

I am a big fan of my car not looking like a spaceship also. I was rocking some temporary rear wheelskirts for awhile but put on some powdercoated Hx rims with high performance LLR tires. I am going to make some nice aluminum ones pretty soon. The front lip is a little ricer but it was free and carbon, also is the perfect height to build my full length belly pan off of. The rear of my car also has homemade VG's to minimize flow separation over the back window. Oh, the car is also equipped with a custom aluminum upper grill blockoff plate.
My engine is completely bone stock, 180,000 miles, has a cold air tube connected to the stock airbox snorkel. I fill up with 91 octane because my engine seems to like it a little more.
Heres a few pix of mine, getting great FE and looking good doing it

The average driver in a HX should be able to get about 45mpg easy. In fact there is another member on the ecomodder forum I frequent that gets 40+mpg out of his Hx with a b16 swap. ANY civic should be able to net 40+, the vtec-e models, Hx and Vx, really allow for efficient cruising.

Looks good bro, this one still has the stock HX wheels as well so I'm good there. If you have time can I see pics of the rear valances you put on and possibly the block off plate?
Thanks,
Nick.

97 civic hx with 95 civic si transmission
exedy organic clutch, stock flywheel, short shift
i/h/e
16inch rotas
injen sri
slammed on GC sleeves and illuminas
AC and PS
i fill up 10 gallons, cost me around $45-$50, lasts me about 330+ miles, city with AC daily. hwy = around 360+. so yeah its good to go, even with a shorter geared transmission.

I have a 00 em1 with a 98 y8 block and 5 speed tranny topped with a y5 head and intake. It has a Greddy EVO2 catback and high flow cat. It rides on 16's and dropped about 2" on koni\ground controls. I avarage (city and highway) about 47 mpg and can get over 50 on all highway driving.

I've fought with idea of getting the b16a2 that is supposed to be in it (I've found some great deals on complete swaps), but its getting harder and harder to pass up awesome fuel economy I'm getting. I drive 60 miles round trip to work and average about 35,000 miles a year on both vehicles.

The block off plates are just simple aluminum plates ziptied into place
And my last fill gave me 67.18 mpg
Thats 800 miles per tank
Hybrid owners are suckers

I get around 32mpg in my '00 HX with 110,000 miles. I have a K&N replacement filter, stock exhaust manifold and 2.25 exhaust piping to a chambered muffler.
I could probably get better mileage, but it needs a tune up and a drive over a a set of hills on my commute to work everyday.

Cars look great guys and the fuel economy is even more incredible!!! Vince, those are some unbelievable #'s bro
Well after spending about 2 and 1/2 hr's detailing/cleaning and also installing the stock intake on the Subaru the dealership finally called me back. He asks "Well how much are you looking to get for a trade in on the Subaru?" I said "Well considering it has been fully rebuilt just 20k miles ago and gets 29mpg I'd like to see $2900ish if I was to sell it outright but I'd take $2400 on a trade in if it will get me into that Civic" He says "I'll call you back, I have to consult with the sales manager". 20 minutes goes by "ring ring" Hello? "Hey Nick, it's Amon and the figure I have for you is just terrible, its honestly soo low I'm not even going to tell you as I would be insulted by it if I were you. I would suggest selling it outright then coming to see us" So I said lemme talk to your sales manager. He gets on the phone "Hi, this is Tom. Can I help you?" I said "Yes you can! You can tell me why it's perfectly fine for your car dealership to go $400 over book on a 10 year old car but you can even come close to a "good priced" trade in on it!" He backpeddles for about 8 seconds before I said "**** you!" and hung up.
So yeah, until I can sell this crutch it looks like I will continue to pay out the *** at the pump

Stop wasting your money, your car does not like it a "little more" its all in your head
The octane rating of gasoline is a measure of how much you can compress the gasoline before it ignites, not how “good” it is.
Anyway:
My HX would get an average of 32-36 and I squeezed 46 out of it with a straight trip from the bay to LA (99.9% freeway)

Throw it on Auto Trader. I tried selling my car for months locally and on here. Put my Del Sols on there and both sold the first day to the first people who called. My prelude sold after 3 days to the second person.

The things people will do now-a-days for better gas mileage lol. You people and your high mpg #'s make me sick! I'm still only getting 230-250 miles to the tank with a D16Y7 engine/tranny with ALL D15B7 components in a 92 civic. Screwing out almost all the way that wax screw thing on the FITV brought me up to 370 miles per tank constant for about 1 or 2 months!! The only huge drawback was a REALLY annoying bouncing idle. I have an exhaust so I couldn't tolerate it. It was also embarrasing. I screwed the FITV wax all the way back in, idle went to normal, and gas mileage dropped to 230-250 per tank again. This tells me the car is running rich and the car was ENJOYING the extra air coming in. WTF.
