Default Gsr revs bounce at 5500 after hitting 7000+ rpm

The engine is a OBDIIA B18C1 and about 3 weeks ago I was racing a friend and I accidently hit the rev-limiter then when I switched gears I wasn't able to rev past 5500 rpm and the tach just bounces there but if I turned the car off and back on, problem solved.

This has happened a few times since then. At first I thought it was the ecu causing this because when I turned to car off and back on it worked fine, But last night I was racing another person from a dig and I was shifting at around 7200rpm and the car felt kind of sluggish, which I didn't even realize untill I hit forth gear and I felt alot more power come to it.

Then when we tried to do a run from a dig same problem it wouldn't rev past 5.5k so I shut the car off while driving and tried to start it again like I had done 3 or 4 times before this time it wouldn't start and I couldn't tell if it was turning over or not. So now im kinda thinking its the dizzy, any ideas?

I know my tach isn't off. there is a very big difference in sound between 5k rpms and 8k rpms

My tach was doing something similar after I got it back from the dealer (new valve seals and piston rings). Around 4500-5000 rpm the needle would start to bounce around while I kept revving. When I popped the hood I noticed that the distributor was loose. They had forgot to tighten it down.

It could be worth checking out. If it is loose, tighten it down and then get the timing checked.

Im lost here, Vtec is engauging, and the fuel cut (if thats what it is) happens pretty much every time I hit 6500+rpm.

Help please.

Is the car missing or hitting a rev limiter? Are there any stored CELs? OBDIIA should catch misfires.

Im sorry, what coils? If your refering to ignition coils I am lacking those. if by blue wire you are talking about the one running to the vtec solenoid its fine. Vtec still enguages even when it hits the "rev limiter".

It is defiently not missing, it is more like a 5500 rmp revlimiter. only cel is for the upstream o2 sensor. But I have driven the car for 3 months with the cel and this problem just started. Im thinking its the ECU, but I don't want to fork the $ for another one. Is there any way to test one rather than swap out for another ecu?

I have an O2 sensor code and p0505 which is a Idle control system malfunction. but i dont think that would cause the problem im having now.

Just a thought: if the vtec solenoid or screen are dirty could it possibly send a low oil pressure signal to the ecu and put the engine into protect by not letting it rev over 5k?

Im not meaning to be an *** but did I ask anyone to fix my car? No. I am having a problem with my car and I am trying to use this website as a tool to find information to fix my problem myself, searching did me no help so I figured that I would post my problem and see if anyone has had any experience with this issue.

On top of that I have explained exactly what is happning, there is nothing to see and there is no noise except for the engine sounding like its hitting a rev limiter at 5k rpms.

Please don't waste my time with usless responses that wern't thought all the way through.
