Default sputtering engine (changed title)

92 accord. Manual. 2.2l.

I recently set my valve lash and when i put it all back together, the car started and sputtered. the RPM went up to about 1500 then started surging, all the while sounding like it was sputtering and was going to stall.

So i removed the valve cover and found an oil leak. I replaced it and put rtv sealant and that cleared the leak up. I started the car again and more sputtering but it sound a little less dramatic although i could just be being hopeful. Turned the car off, pulled off cover, timing belt cover, etc. Set the engine again to TDC for #1 cylinder. camshaft pulleys shows TDC, flywheel view hole (?), shows TDC marks. So i check the distributor thinking it may be out of alignment.

At TDC the rotor doesnt even point close to the #1 terminal. Its closest edge is probably 3/16 away. (i found out after later investigation that it doesnt have to. theres a delay built in so pardon me for being a dumb ars)

So my question is how do i fix the sputtering sound.
Thanks for reading

What does that mean? Did you try to adjust your valves? Did you change your intake or exhaust vavles?

Also, when you set timing, the #1 cylinder (closest to the timing belt) MUST me at TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke.

Did you remove the distributor? Need more info on what exactly it is that you did to your car to get an answer.

I recently bought a car that was riddled with problems. Bad choice but I didnt know at the time, obviously. A month after i bought it it just died one day. I replaced the regulator, main relay and fuel pump. It ran a okay and then i decided to do a tune up because it started misfiring and i believe it was on the third cylinder. i pulled the plugs and i saw a lot of oil on the third cylinder's plug. Bought gasket set and replaced gasket and since i was in there i decided to set the "valve lash". This is where my story returns to the original post.

I pulled the distributor cap, spark plugs, etc to rotate the engine by hand to TDC. The distributor has never been pulled off the car. So today after i posted the first time, i went outside and stripped all the pieces to readjust valves, thinking i may have messed up. they are all well within tolerance and tightened down. I put it all back together and bought new spark plugs. Put those in and the problem persists. It starts it just sounds HORRIBLE.

oh and i would like to add that valver cover has been off for a week and half. I took it to get powder coated. Figured do it all at one time. During the week and a half, the hood was down, i put aluminum foil over the top in place of the valve cover just in case., and it didnt rain. I dont know if this could be a problem but i cant see why it would be. I also checked the engine oil level via dipstick before starting it the first time.

Thanks again for the help

why are you bumping your thread 2 hours later?

Anyways, I would say that if you never touched the timing or distributor, DO NOT ADJUST ANYTHING. even if it looks off to you, dont touch it. The car ran before, so thats not the current problem.

1) leaving the valve cover off for a week is not good, even with aluminum foil over the head.

2) I would check to make sure that your firing order is correct.

Ok so here is an update:

I had my little brother install my dist. cap, new plug wires, fuel filter. He is pretty good under the hood. So he told me he took the timing belt off the camshaft pulley. why i have no idea. he said it was in his way although everything he did was on the other side of the engine. so my question is: when he put it back on, if he turned the camshaft even one tooth it could throw the timing off. How do i get it back to where it's supposed to be?

anybody? kinda flyin blind

I have read up about setting the timing. Do i need to go buy a timing gun and start from scratch as (in my mind) this probably the problem. The only left that i havent tried of the things that have been changed or touched.

thanks and sorry for being pushy, annoying, etc but i gotta get this running by saturday afternoon.
