Got a new car today ...
... and it's not an Integra.
After weeks of searching, I finally realized that I could not afford an Integra that was up to my standards with the money from my insurance settlement. With what I had in the bank my choices were limited to a nice LS, probably with an automatic transmission, or a GS-R that had been beaten to hell.
This left me in an unpleasant predicament: I could either buy a car that I didn't really want now and have to drive it for the next couple of years, and have the freedom to look for jobs everywhere but Dallas (I hate everything within 150 miles of DFW), OR I could resign myself to staying here for the next couple of years, look for jobs in the Dallas area, and save up money for a GS-R in good shape. Living in Dallas sucks bad enough even with a car, but without one it is damn near unbearable. So with a heavy heart, I gave up on looking for another Integra (for now), and started considering the options available to me right now. I was looking for something I wouldn't totally loathe driving for the next couple of years, something that wouldn't remind me every day of the car I don't have anymore. It was a pretty short list.
My new car:
• has double wishbone suspension on all four corners
• is powered by a small-displacement, DOHC, 16v four-cylinder
• uses a FR layout
• has nearly 50/50 weight distribution
• weighs 2,100 lbs.
• was made in Japan
(these are all good things in my book, by the way.)
That's right, I bought a 1990 Miata.
I'd always toyed with the idea of owning one. After seeing the disappointing selection of Integras for sale, I figured now was my chance to go ahead and get one. I started looking at them this week, and while I wasn't terribly impressed with what was out there in my price range, it was easier to lower my expectations for a car I wasn't planning on keeping very long. Still, I was disappointed that I didn't have quite enough money to get one that wasn't either hail damaged or had accumulated too many miles. But yesterday I got lucky.
The car has 106,500 miles on it, not bad for a car that's pushing 20 years old. And the seller runs a body shop, and had completely repainted the car last month. The mileage and service history checked out, the exterior, interior and top were all in good shape, it drove beautifully and the price was right. So I bought it today. It will be an excellent car for me while I try to get the rest of my life in order and save up for something else.
I still haven't given up on Integras entirely, though. I still plan on buying one as soon as I can afford a good one, as long as they haven't all been stolen by then. But for now, well, I'm happy to have something that is both economical and fun to drive.

Yeah, pics are coming. It was too dark to take any tonight when I got it home.
So far I really like it, but it'll be stuck in a garage until I get it insured, registered and inspected. It's a 1.6 liter, 120 hp, and I expected it to feel underpowered. Thankfully it doesn't, although it's not fast by any means. The car is totally stock as far as I can tell, and I may just leave it that way.
