Default Timing Belt/Water Pump

I have a 99 Honda Civic and I'm trying to decide what kind of timing belt and water pump I should buy. Does anyone know the quality of GoodYear, Deco, Continental, and Gates timing belts? Which one is the best?

Also, does anyone know the quality of Fenco, Beck Arnley, and TrueFlow water pumps? Which one is the best?

Are the different brands of timing belts and water pumps equal in quality? Which one should I buy?

I bought mine at Honda. No sense taking chances with super important parts like that. It could be the death of your entire engine if they fail.

yeah, especially on something like the belt, OEM cant be that overpriced or more than a generic one.

75,000 miles not km. i cant argue oem but it was for my daily driver...completely stock. on my 2000 si i used aftermarket but its turnin an aftermarket drivetrain so i bought somethin that was meant to withstand the extra strain.

I would get the Honda equipment just because you know it will fit right. There's been several times I've had aftermarket parts not fit just right, and I've had to go exchange them and go through that whole process. Standing there with the engine taken apart like that is not the time to find out you have parts (belt, tensioner, waterpump, seals, ect) that don't fit right. You don't want to have to run to the dealer and find out he doesn't have the stuff in stock at the moment. You may have that engine disassembled for a couple days until the right parts come!

By the way, I priced the OEM timing belt gear at Majestic Honda for my car, and it's comparable to the prices at Autozone. The local dealer was much more expensive.

Good luck!

I have a 99 Honda Civic 4DR SE (Special Edition) sedan. Is the Special Edition the same as DX or LX. Is the timing belt the same in SE, DX and LX?

Good Question! I really can't find a lot about the SE. What is the code on your engine? D16Y7 or D16Y8? In 1999, all CX, DX, Value Package, and LX models used the D16Y7. The EX had the D16Y8. So, once you determine the engine code, you can go online to a parts dealer and put your car in as a LX or EX according to your engine code. The timing belt will be the same as that model.

I just purchased a timing belt kit for my Honda (D16Y8) - just arrived in the mail like 2 days ago.

Bought OEM Honda parts from this site:
http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com

Spent $137.52 for the water pump, timing belt, and tensioner, came out to 158.34 with shipping and handling.

I'd recommend buying the timing belt stuff from Honda.

Syndacate is right! If you buy from an online dealer, the parts are just as cheap as aftermarket parts at a local store for bigger jobs such as a timing belt job...don't expect to order a Toyo Roki oil filter by itself for an oil change and get off cheaper than buying an oil filter at the most expensive dealership.

Yeah, OEM water pump works great for my 00' civic daily driver, I went with a gates timing belt. All, work great, just need to fine tune the timing a tad. Good luck.

x2 oem is the best when it comes to belts, gaskets, seals, bearings, ect.

Also, if your oil seals (crank/cam) look leaky at all change them. You'll regret it if you do all that work and then there's oil dripping. Just be careful if you change the seals to NOT SCRATCH THE CAM OR CRANK AT ALL!!! For that matter don't scratch anything.

That said, my crank seal was weeping oil when I changed my belt and I left it alone. The person who owned the car before me hadn't changed the belt in 136k and it was flopping around like crazy. I don't think a wrench had ever touched anything under the hood because all the bolt heads looked pristine brand new condition. After I put the new belt on there was a few drips of oil for a few days then it stopped leaking. Now at 160k and no leaks.

I changed belt, pump and tensioner with Honda parts bought at the stealership.
