Default K20b Honda Engine equal to 1AZ-FSE Toyota Engine?

Hello everybody, this is my first post, so I'm not really sure to write in the right section. Anyway, I was looking at the specifications of the two 2.0l direct injection engines built by Honda and Toyota (k20B and 1AZ-FSE) and I was very surprised when I saw that they are practically equal in all of the data:

displacement: 1998 cc
bore: 86 mm
stroke: 86 mm
power: 155hp (114kW) at 6000 rpm
torque: 192 Nm at 4000 rpm

So, I would like to ask you: is there a direct connection between these two engines? Are they the result of a combined work of Toyota and Honda, or did I completely misunderstand everything?

PS: I'm Italian, so my English is not perfect. I hope you can be patient on this...

I doubt there is a connection... they both definitely benchmarked each other's engines but I'm sure if you put the engines side by side you'd see a difference. The Toyota AZ series engine is pretty old now, I believe introduced in North America in 2000 with the 1AZ in the Rav4... although no direct injection. The AZ is due for replacement soon.

However both Toyota and Honda use Denso as their major supplier for sensors, ECU's, radiators, HVAC, starter, alternator etc. This would probably include the direct injection system, possibly share the same design and some components.

Thank for your answer, stumpyf4. I was in doubt because of a series of reasons: specifications are equal; AZ series was born in 2000, K series in 2001; 1AZ-FSE equipped some Toyota models starting from 2002, K20B had been placed just on the JDM Honda Stream starting from 2003. But then I found some images which show that the two direct injection sistems are different: Honda is vertical, Toyota isn't (and due to this Honda system seems to be better). But I don't understand why Honda doesn't use it anymore...

This is not the structure of the 1AZ-FSE, I can tell by the valve rocker used. The 1AZ had buckets over the valve stem and the cam rides directly on the bucket with 1:1 valve actuation ratio. I think the head you posted is the GR series direct injection used on the GS300/IS250 with direct injection.
