Default "de-shave"

Well, I had a 89 crx hf with an ls/vtec.

got an offer to trade it for a 2000 coupe with ugly z3 fenders and shaved side moldings , but the rest of the car was clean... it had a nice suspension and exhaust and low mileage....

(bad pic but you get the point)

so i said what the hell and traded. it was recently painted and they did a pretty good job, i like the color too. So basically i was wondering how hard would it be to i guess "de-shave" the side moldings? whats the easiest way to tell if its metal or just bondo? would it be easier to just get another car? kind of sucks because it was just painted and they did a pretty good job, and i dont have the money to repaint it if i terrorize the thing too much

no need to flame, i realize it isnt the most attractive thing to do to a coupe

It all depends on how they were "shaved". If the shaving process was done properly, it's going to be tricky removing the welded in panels. If it was something the previous owner didn't spend much money on, then removing the body filler won't be too difficult.

can you remove the inside door panels and see in the mount holes for the trim? You should see if it has metal in there that way.

yes i have removed the door panels but i cant see through the holes because the clips are still in there.

i was thinking about it and if i was real desperate i could just buy new door shells and fenders. but of course that would leave me with the quarter panels still...

If it was done properly there should be evidence of welding visible from the inside. If the clips are still there, I bet they slapped some bondo in and called it a day.

Slam your doors a few times and see if it falls out. J/k.

well last owner did shave my da i jsut brough.. it was HORRABLE!!!! its like extra inch on bondo stickign out... so i taped out the non bondo area and use the wire brush on a drill and took some time but it got it all out and clean!!! and then i just sanded it to smooth out the scratches, u can use sand paper but that will cost alot more and more time then wire brush make sure tape few layer before u wire brush it so dont damage the paint around it, takes about 1 hr per side,

You could just drill the holes and put the molding back on, that's how they come on the integra, they sit flush, not recessed in. The molding will stick out more. Just an idea

Sounds to me it was a quick shave job.

Its mostlikely just bondo if clips are there.
If its sheet metal to fill the whole then that can grind off. You can cut in the middle where the molding hole is and basicly bend it somewhat then you can get an idea where to grind it off. Take it to a bodyshop. Cheapest bet if there is metal is door shell. Z3 fenders are trash anyways.

They were suppost to weld the clip wholes then sheet metal. I guess not.

I would prefer elite. Why did you trade the crx?? It was clean!!

lol who wouldnt trade an 89 lsvtec crx with hardly any interior for a clean 2000 coupe.

besides, the coupe is looking pretty good now (aside from the previously stated[fenders and moldings])

it does look really clean. I think you should wait, it might grow on you???

I would wait till something happens and its time for a paint job then decide if it was my car. Your right crx with no interior daily

i like the nice quiet vibrant stealth muffler on my car now

when i bought my 99 si, they guy who owned it before me shaved the moulding AND door handles I wouldnt have really minded if the door handles were still there. but i ended up buying new doors. now i have moulding on the doors, and not on the fenders or pannels. i dont know what would be easier, getting rid of the molding on the doors, or adding moulding everywhere else....

and if you just want to drill holed and put moulding on that isnt resessed in, just buy the thin moulding so it isnt sticking out as far.

Good luck

thats what i was thinking of doing actually, i know a few guys who work at a body shop so maybe they could find me some that would work.

or i could just buy new doors like the other guy said, and only have to worry about the quarter panels.

I think the car looks good with the moldings shaved, my opinion. I think that was a good trade you did. An 89 for a 00. I would just suck it up and move on. Replace the fenders and you are set. Sell it on ebay to some other ricer kid.

You would probably save yourself a lot of time just selling it and finding another one.
