Gsr Synchros
Well I just bought a gsr(well it is claim to be) tranny in substitution for my ls tranny and I cannot really notice any difference; please advise me on how i can tell...like what rpm differences, etc. Though that ain't the f#$ked up part of all this; the guy I had bought it from said it has no grinds(shifts into all gears smoothly, etc. etc.) Now I found out after it's installed, 3rd gear grinds EVERYTIME I rev above like 4000rpm while switching into 3rd. I was told that it could be the 3rd gear synchro--How much do they go for? And how hard is it to swap the synchros?
Oh yeah, the damn tranny "winds" weird noise when engaged and accelerating on first--what the heck is that?

Tranny "wine" I believe is caused by square cut gears instead of rounded (tapered) ones. I know reverse wines and I think first does too, althought not as loud. So thats normal.
Your synchros are deffinately messed up and should be replaced. Acura sells the synchros only in the entire forward set. I looked into this awhile back for my GSR and it was around $250 for the set. But it is very labor intensive.

I had excatly the same problem. If you go back about 3-4 pages you should find the topic. This is what I did,
Go to Acura dealership service department and get them to run the number in the transmission block. It is a rectangular piece of metal with numbers and letters. They can then tell you if it is an LS or GSR.
I thought mine was a GSR tranny on an LS motor but they found out it is an LS tranny. By the way my third gear and synchros cost $299.
Good luck

So nobody knows how to tell a Gsr from an Ls by where the rpm sits huh? Like I heard somewhere that with a gsr tranny while going 80mph in 5th gear, ur rpm should be at 4000. An Ls in fifth at 80mph should be lower...I'm assuming. The weird thing w/ this tranny is that it don't have that metal tag w/the vin# like on my stock one.....instead it's like this silver sticker-type tag that's coming off which said y80 and some other#'s.
So how hard is it to install the 3rd gear and synchros? And how much is it usually to get someone to install them (labor)?
Thanks for the replies.
