Default Did you Hug your Crank today ?

Crankshaft That is,

I KNOW this may be OFF TOPIC, but with so many gear heads here I figure you guys may get a kick out of the photos, but if needed please move to the correct section

Some pictures for your enjoyment :D

While some of us sleep, some of us were hugging a Crankshaft, 5 days total to remove crankshaft from engine bay out of engine room and new one installed, lots of sleepless nights but we got it done.

Enjoy the photos

Why did it need a new crank? Spin a bearing at a whopping 800RPM or something? lol

No plastiguage with them, cond rod nuts are Hydraulic torqued to 600 bar or 8702.4 psi

I've seen some guys replace a piston on a ship motor like that on discovery channel. The piston alone was something like 500,000 dollars so how much is that crank??

Been a old engine, the lube oil pump is electrically operated, the vessel had a "blackout" which stop the lube oil pump , the oil to the engine stop, by the time the engine trip the damage was already done, the cost of that crankshaft is $650.000USD, and is a reconditioned shaft since we don't build that engine model anymore, that shaft was at one of our factory's in Trieste Italy. for any of you that have gone in cruise ships chances are they had our engines as 80 % of them have our engines. that is from a 12 cyl engine 400 mm bore, we have engines that are 20 cyl v 340mm bore and our newest one is 20 V 500mm bore

you would think they would have some sort of backup generator for the lube oil pump if power is lost and save them over a million dollars to have a crank replaced. LOL dur
