D16A6 mystery!
90 civic hatch frankentsteined by the the previous owner. Unable to identify the head but I will post pics asap
D16A6 block
Aftermarket but seemingly generic CAI/IM/H/Muffler
during my commute to work 1 day my hatch lost power and the exhaust note changed quite noticeably (louder, more sharp like a old lawnmower).
I’ve done a lot of searching in the last 2 weeks and its evident this engine needs some expensive internal work done (long overdue work, I know).
in an effort to get the car drivable again until a rebuild is more feasible, i planned on checking the timing hoping to readjust and be temporarily back in business. thats when i noticed my adjustable cam gear was missing 2 of the 6 bolts holding it on the cam. i'll post a pic asap.
I apologize for the lengthy intro. absolutely ANY help, advice, suggestion, etc. is appreciated.
if you made it this far…thanks.

I think your timing belt might have skipped a tooth there.
First address the timing belt and make sure its correct (or as correct as it can be with that particular head) then move on to a leakdown test to find out which valves or rings are taking the oil.

can i reliably set the timing with this setup in the event my belt jumped a tooth?
clearly wouldnt be ideal, but i just need to get this thing back on the road so i can get it to a garage for some teardown.
thanks again in advance

With a timing gun you'll be able to tell pretty quick if its off a tooth. The full adjustment range of the distributor will not come close to lining up the notches on the crank pulley with the pointer.
